Because the lightsaber fights are better than the space battles in the prequels.

This is so true, the saber battles in the OT are frankly pathetic, the one in TFA is pretty awful as well. What the hell happened to all the saber skills? It's like everyone turned into Napoleon Dynamite after ROTS.

Hoth isn't a space battle it's a ground invasion followed by a sucker punching ion canon.

I do love the Endor fight.

Yavin is nostalgic but not very good.

I honestly don't remember much about Scarif, only seen Rogue One once, but I remember liking Poe a lot in TFA. To me, a Star Wars space battle is just not cricket without capital ships blasting each other with fighter support. Now that's a WAR not this top gun bs.

I have the opposite feeling about the saber fights. The OT ones are awesome and tense, while the PT ones are rabbits on speed bouncing around. The OT fights are all about the interactions between the characters. The actual swinging of the saber is almost secondary. On Bespin, at the start, you can clearly see that Vader is just toying with Luke - one handed saber, not bothering to attack much, just playing with him.

Yavin is the same. It's about the characters. Watching Yavin and Starkiller one after another, it's really striking - almost every pilot on Yavin gets some screen time. You get to know them, and they matter. The Starkiller base fight has Poe, plus some random other dudes you don't see, don't know, and don't really care about.

@FlyingToaster I totally agree with you re: saber fights. The prequel fights were ridiculous. All flips and spins, CGI gobbledegook and no suspense.

Vader v Luke in Bespin was the absolute best.

And in Rebels Obi v Maul was a close second. That's how a real saber fight between masters would be, a long tense moment and a decisive cut: the end.

I thought the climactic battle between Finn/Rey and Kylo was incredible. The trees, the snow the intensity and the actors were doing real fencing/ fechtbuch moves (see Rey v Kylo right as she's defeating him, it looks straight from a 15th cent German fencing woodcut).

agree with Toaster as well. The prequel trilogy lightsaber battles were a bad joke, totally devoid of drama. They were little more than Star Wars themed dance-offs (and have become a meme to that effect).

What I like about Yavin is that it makes the viewer care about the pilots, more than the other large battles, although Coruscant comes close.

In regards to saber duels, Duel of the Fates and Anakin vs Obi wan are the top two and it's not even close.

Some of the clone wars ones were really good too.

There are space battle and then there are ground assaults in various forms. To frame them here are the ground assaults in sequence order.

TPM - none (Gungan fight really doesn't count)
AotC - Geonosis (far more ground than air but still had air support)
RotS - Several here but none really stands out
RO - Attack on the Imperial Research Station; also half of Scarif
AnH - Trench Run
ESP - HOTH
RotJ - none to speak of as Endor's ground game is a joke.
TFA - Starkiller Base, Palace

The battles I've found most exciting are those X-Wing assaults in RO and TFA which aren't so tied hemmed in by things.

Another problem judging these is which version of the original trilogy are we going to use? The theatrical release or the "upgraded" ones that Lucas made with the new CGI toys?

You do realize that a signature concept of jedi is they have super heightened reflexes and senses so the prequel fights are faaar more accurate as to what a jedi battle should look like.

And I respectfully disagree on Yavin, watched those movies back in the 80's unscathed by Lucas's cgi bs and no most the pilots at yavin were back story canon fodder. The fat guy, aka porkins, never gave a **** about him he dies so fast. Biggs is NO WHERE in the original cut and equally useless, red leader was the only competent pilot out of the whole bunch and he does go out heroically but again had no name, gold leader no name, they may have been given names but not on screen. Wedge is even a wash out in a new hope. I respect everyone's opinion but I saw different movies even back when they were new.

1. Endor - still the best space battle ever

2. Scarif - close to Endor but not as good

3. Yavin - the most personal battle of them all

4. Hoth Asteroid Field - more of a chase then a fight but still very cool

5. Starkiller Base - not as good as Yavin/Endor and not really a space battle still better than the prequels

6. Geonosis Asteroid Field - not as good as Hoth Asteroid Field

7. Naboo - all over the place

8. Coruscant - I don't even count it as a space battle

No. Luke / Vader in Empire Strikes Back was the best, followed by Luke / Vader in Return of the Jedi, and Vader / Ben in A New Hope.

As for the prequels... I'm just going to leave this here:

I'd watch that anyday over ot lightsaber battles. That was pretty creative and funny.

Well everyone has their opinions.

One reason I find anakin vs obi wan so amazing is that most of the duel is REALLY the actors going at it full speed.

It's not stunt doubles or sped up footage or other trickery for the majority of it. Just two actors who put a hell of a lot of training and practice into the fight as they wanted it to be the best lightsaber duel ever seen on screen.

I see this gif posted to death. Yea it's a bit goofy even if there's an apparent reason for it, but it doesn't invalidate anything I said. It's still 100% the actors doing it. Plus it's a minute fraction of the whole duel, they don't keep doing this over and over.
