I was just wondering how the forums feels about using different types of ships vs the standard bases for the game. Examples could be custom made ships from a 3d printer, using a floating stand for a cr90 to have 2 models on one base, or even using a mc80 model on an assult Frigate base for cosmetic reasons (I really don't like the space potatoe haha).

This could be in either casual or tourny settings (fyi I'm not talking about using wrong bases or pionts those stay all official)

In a casual game with opponent permission, sure. That sounds fun. I expect 95% of opponents to be a-okay with that.

In a tournament setting, no. The event is timed and most competitors are used to making mental judgments by looking across the table and recognizing familiar models. Non-standard models complicate that. It's not a big deal in a casual setting (as you can just slow down and think about it or ask your opponent again) but in a competitive setting, there's no room for anything that has the potential to cause confusion or slow down the speed of a game. Plus you can't guarantee everyone that person would play against is fine with it.

There's also the matter of FFG events technically need to have FFG components only. I've seen that restriction bent a bit when it comes to playmats and nobody batted an eye, though. I suspect judges/players wouldn't be so unanimously lenient with ship models, though, for the reasons I gave above.

Short version: casual play that sounds absolutely fine and I'd encourage it (with opponent permission). Tournaments no way.

Yeah, fun for casual, If you want to try a tourney, keep the new models reasonably close to the originals, and have the official model as backup if anyone objects (it's their right to do so).

I wouldn't swap one legal ship for another cosmetically, tho.. that will get confusing.

I'd play. But again, echoing what others have said already ... I'd only be okay with it for casual games or perhaps a custom narrative game of some sort. Anything relating to tourney style battles, even a "friendly" tournament among 4+ friends (which, in my experience, unfortunately, seem to have a higher likelihood of descending into unsportsmanlike behavior), and I'd strongly oppose for reasons already mentioned.

Also, for squadrons: What about using replacements to make aces stand out from normal squadrons? I have a TIE Vanguard squadron to replace Jonus with, and some Missile Boats to replace Maarek Stele with.

I have organized tournaments... casual ones... the most unusual I've seen so far is someone hot-gluing pipe cleaners to their MC-30s to fly with magnificent space shrimp. As long as his opponent was ok, I think it was all right, and he always had a spare on hand in case not. Typically as long as someone was clear with what the replacement was, it was fine.

I have more than a share of replacement models myself beyond the squads I mentioned. Sometimes I'll use an Imperial Strike Frigate when Engine Techs Demolisher is on the table.

Legally speaking, for FFG Organised Play Tournaments - if you have a Damage Nebulon B, you can't use that Nebulon-B, unless that Nebulon-B was Damage during the tournament - you can use it until the end of the Tournament, as per the Damaged Models policy.

If your FFG Model is damaged by: "Usage, Wear and/or Tear", then FFG expects you to purchase a Replacement. They only legally replace models that are damaged due to manufacturing or transport.

When it comes to Squadrons, you must use FFG Components... This can be a little grey in the "Vader Advanced and two TIE escort" motif that we see, but replacing FFG Models with 3rd Party Models is simply flat out not allowed in the rules... As far as FFG is concerned, the base is where the distinction is. The models themselves need no more distinction with that (The idea being you see the models, recognise the class , and then look at the base to see if its an Ace or not - and if it is, which one.)

Awesomely speaking, I like seeing the differences... As a TO, I try to encourage it in my group as much as possible (as I do painting, too - I enjoy seeing paints and conversions to distinguish things), but I also know that come a High-End FFG Event, or an event run by anyone else in the City, its not my call, and a TO may indeed be hard-cast to demand FFG Components. (This actually happened when a Store was 'sanctioned' for not following the FFG OP Rules, lost a chunk of their payment discount, and subsquently turned into hardasses in following every rule to the letter .)

Are the Rebellion TIEs a bigger/better sculpt the way that the X-wing sculpts are? I'm really looking forward to getting my embiggened X-wings painted. (although, for some reason, I'm just not coming up with a list to fly them with....)

And they are still FFG components, right? So Tourney legal?

They Rebellion TIEs are indeed a Larger and Better Sculpt (they have internal Wing Roots, for example.

The X-Wings as well as a larger and Better sculpt, with more Details.

The Y Wings, hwoever, are only larger - they are an identical sculpt merely increased in sizein the 3D modelling deparment (the Rebellion Y-Wing even has the Peg mounting position underneath).

You could argue they are FFG Components, I guess - I'd have to check the exact wording.

Yeah, I have Rebellion X's & Y's mounted on pegs, waiting to paint, once I get color schemes worked out for them all. (1 per Ace stand, with 2 regular sized in the same color scheme)

I have a few Star Blazers/Yamato models I use to replace my rebel ship models in casual play. Strictly casual player for this game and if someone told me I couldn't use my models I'd simply not play with them. That being I strongly think you should buy a FFG expansion for components to run your custom ships with. So you still support this awesome game.

So anthennas on Vics were designed to become a money machine... good move FFG...

I play with alternate (3D printed) models at tournaments regularly. I always ask the opponent if they mind, and I have the actual models available if they would prefer that.

But no one ever does, because it's fun having other models on the board. And there are situations where alternate models makes it easier for your opponent, not harder.

But using actual FFG models for different ships during a tournament would definitely not be cool
