This. ^
I have definitely heard it both ways so many times that there's no way to really argue that there's one correct pronunciation, because there's always going to be hundreds of people who say it the other way.
I personally call it an A.T.A.T., but I have heard it called an atat enough times that I'm good with both.

I suppose she'll try to (in) accurately refer to the new AT-ACT's as Ae Te Acties then.
You call out the letters, you do NOT try to make a song out of them.
Okay, so for all those mistaken people who pronounce it @-@, now please tell me how you pronounce AT-ST, AT-ACT, AT-TE, etc. ...
Q.E.D., it's A.T.-A.T.
The more important question is how do you pronounce
Executor
?
(1) Ex-ah-cute-er (like someone who performs executions, a la an executioner)
-or-
(2) Ex-eck-u-tor (like someone who carries out the terms of a will, e.g. the Emperor's Will)
the word can, of course, be pronounced either way...
I think it's the second one. If it were the first, I think it would be called the Executioner (unless Lucas didn't want to deal with trademark battles with Marvel... Thor comics were pretty popular when ANH came out!)
If you were a small child in the early'80s you only knew them as @@.
It wasn't until the late '80s when looking back at star wars memories did it ever come up that A T A T was even a possibility.

Tantive Eyevee
Funny really, there's debate how to pronounce AT-AT as either "Atat" or "Aitee Aitee", but everybody pronounces AT-ST as "Aitee estee". Nobody says "Atssst". So "Atee atee" would seem the most logical.
Personally I also say Atat.
