Boba crew vs Tomax Bren

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Need help settling a stupidly long debate in a Facebook group.

A Scum player with Boba Fett crew attempts to discard Tomax Bren's Crack Shot. Now, assuming that Tomax has not already used his pilot ability, would the Tomax player be able to flip Crack Shot back up?

Tomax's text:

Once per round, after you discard an EPT Upgrade card, flip that card faceup.

Boba's text:

After performing an attack, if the defender was dealt a faceup Damage card, you may discard this card to choose and discard 1 of the defender's Upgrade cards.

The debate is largely coming around to the definition of "you" as it relates to Tomax. Tomax states that "after you discard an EPT," the question is largely whether Boba's forced Discard means that Tomax does not apply, as he is not the "You" performing the discard.

Thanks!

Thank you for specifying this assumption. If Tomax HAS already used his pilot ability this round, then there is absolutely no way for him to flip the card back up. Some people think he can do it at the start of the next round, but that's actually wrong because Tomax's ability has a timing trigger of "after you discard", which is immediate. By the time the next round starts, the window to use Tomax's ability has already passed.

We know that a player can discard an ordnance token when Boba Fett attempts to discard a card with an ordnance token on it, and Extra Munitions uses the same "you" that Tomax does, so I would say that if Tomax has not yet used his ability this round then he can flip back up his EPT that Boba forced him to discard.

Boba Fett FAQ: "If Boba Fett is used to discard an Upgrade card that has an ordnance token on it (including the Extra Munitions Upgrade card itself), the opposing player can discard the ordnance token instead."

Extra Munitions text: "[...] When you are instructed to discard an Upgrade card, you may discard 1 ordnance token on that card instead." (emphasis mine)

Think I'd be putting it in the same boat as Extra Munitions and the munitions tokens. Boba may say you have to but YOU are still the one doing the discarding and if that can be modified you'd be allowed to do it.

This precedent seems pretty clear. I would say Tomas can absolutely save his EPT from Boba assuming he hasn't used his ability this round yet.

As much as I dislike the official ruling on Boba/EM (because it's wrong in the context of what's actually writen on the cards) it IS the offical ruling, and it sets the precedence. Tomax can flip it back up.
