Building with ebb/flow and maybe ascetic...

By TheShard, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I'm trying out various things for a character I have in mind, I like the way ebb/flow rps, I'm trying to build a combat charecter around ebb/flow.

I also like the ascetic as a concept.

I have 500 added xp to work with

What are some cool things to do here?

Soresu Defender (perhaps with Shien mixed in) is an obvious option with how the basic Flow helps you maintain your defense. Even better, Defensive Circle is a Lightsaber check, meaning you can maintain your "Flow" even on turns where you don't want to attack. Defend using Defensive Circle until your opponent is worn down/you get a particularly good Flow roll, then turn around a spike them with an enhanced Lightsaber attack.

Warden could also be an interesting choice, particularly if your GM lets you chain Scathing Tirade. No Escape and Overbalance are both easier to trigger with Ebb in the mix. Might help you get some more mileage out of Fearsome as well, if you use the Range upgrade to set up some penalties before Engaging. Add in Aggressor and you can bounce between Scathing Tirade and Terrify to control enemies.

Executioner might be interesting as a ranged variant on the Flow build, as Essential Kill lets you "double tap" with any non-Gunnery weapon.

Problem is you need like fr4 for ebb/flow to be reliable

If that's your criterion, you'll need at least one double FR spec. Hermit would be a good pick in my opinion, as Menace combines well with Ebb's focus on hindering your opponent, and Survival of the Fittest gives you a good ace in the hole for a very important Force roll. Executioner/Hermit strikes me as a fun build, and it gets you to FR4 without having to pay out-of-career XP costs. Ataru Striker/Hermit would work if you can live with FR3, as Ataru is strain hungry and gives you double-tap capability with Hawk Bat Swoop.

Warden/Ascetic will work quite good, enhance (brawl) for FR 3 and also empty soul means your brawl attack will be 3 force dice with an additional pip of your choice and one of the opposite should you flip a DP. That is an mean result of 5 pips of your shade from the check, gives you advantage and success, your choice, but when you use ebb/flow you cant use enhance though. It gives flexibility AOE use ebb/flow and single target you use enhance.

Niman disciple/Ataru Striker, Enhance, E bb/Flow.

Seek and Sense have also interesting defensive stuff that ate worth about the same XP as their counter part talents

Not if you don't view Flow as a distinct power; view it as an add-on to any roll you're making. Now you have added chances to recover Strain, and it's worthwhile even with only FR1 (and I'd recommend the first Strength upgrade ASAP even with just FR1).

with empty soul you have psuedo FR 4 as you get to add 2 force pips to every force check, one of which is guaranteed to be "your color", in fact with a Destiny point spare you can guarantee triggering mastery by causing or recovering 5 strain (1 pip from each dice rolled for 3 and 2 from empty soul for the 5 you need for basic power + 4 strength upgrades, further guaranteeing a despair on your engaged opponents next roll or a triumph on your own)

I'm thinking shistivan hermit/executioner/ataru striker(or S.Defender)

Will only have about 50xp into ebb/flow to start but... Room to grow!
