Let's talk about Kenkirk

By Goseki1, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So Kenkirk used to be one of my favourite pilots. Teamed with Palp and Ysanne he could take a hell of a kicking and stay standing, but following the Palp Nerf it really undid what worked so well. Namely, you'd generally be defending before shooting, so if you got lucky and didn't need Palp you could save him for offense, or to defend from multiple attacks. After the change it just seems way to much to HAVE to use him on defense.

Are there any things that have released in the past few months, or that will be released that might help him out? A favourite core build was

VT-49 Decimator: · Commander Kenkirk (44)
Predator (3)
· Emperor Palpatine (8)
· Ysanne Isard (4)

Another option:

Commander Kenkirk

  • Lone Wolf
  • Agent Kallus
  • Ysanne Isard

Kallus only works on 1 opponent, and Lone Wolf requires you to be on your tod, but you get a rerollable green die with an automatic focus-to-evade conversion, and a reroll blanks with focus-to-hit (as good as predator.

Throw in a third crew (gunner?) and modification (hull upgrade or countermeasures?) to taste, and you've got a ship which I'd back one-on-one against pretty much anything. The trick will be filling the rest of your points with something you can "trade" for as much of your opponent's squad as possible. As kamikases go, something like Vader in a patrol leader or shuttle might be good - if it dies fast but takes something important with it, you're doing well.

I love the Decimator and never contemplated kenkirk. @Magnus Grendel I really want to try that list now. I need to get my hands on a Kallus. I think to save points for a Quickdraw sidekick I will replace lone wolf with determination, though I understand the lure of lone wolf and it's quasi replacement for the OPs Palp problem.

Recently I've seen far too many devimators get their palp Boba-fetted so I am wary on taking him, but it depends on your meta. Looks like a decent build but he needs some opportune wingmen(man?) to make him work, who were you thinking of?

I used to Run PTL Ryad, but I'd look at anything tbh. Quickdraw, or Whisper etc maybe

Rebel Captive, Rebel Captive, REBEL CAPTIVE! Sorry. Got a bit excited there.

There has been a resurgence of Whisper players in my area, and it sucks. I'm going to bust out my old Kenkirk with Rebel Captive, Gunner, Isard, and Determination, and see if we can't show those phantoms a thing or two. Of course, VI RAC can probably take them on better, but I like Kenkirk.

Indeed. It's a nice tool against mindlink, too.

Yes, before people say it, Mindlink lists don't mind single stress tokens because they'll still get focus tokens easily. But what Rebel Captive is really giving you is preventing them using red moves; even a protectorate fighter isn't that agile if it's nailed to speed 2 turns.

Actually, the reverse is a good thought. Quickdraw is another great kamikaze ship; she's probably "better" when used as a mini-dengar, but built with rage/baffle she can be trusted to knock holes in the enemy squad and to go down quickly but take someone with her - a great pairing for a lone wolf.

Just what I wanted to say!

No, seriously though, while Kenkirk is the Decimator-jockey I fly the least, he's also the one I like to let crash into things with the Dauntless almost as much as Oicunn. After all, you take away one ship's potential to fire at you, and one other deals decreased damage and loses the ability to K-Turn. The more ships you can force to double park, the more hilarious Kenkirks ability to just not die gets.

(Not necessarily the most competitive thinking, I know, but fun!)

You could always use:

VT-49 Decimator: · Commander Kenkirk (44)
Push The Limit (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
· Ysanne Isard (4)
-- TOTAL ------- 55p. --

There's nothing like a start of combat boost on a larger based ship!

Agreed. If you do, I'd recommend finding a point for an inspiring recruit to counteract stressy builds - the third crew slot is up to you.

A seismic torpedo isn't a bad call, either. The Decimator can afford to take the odd point of damage, and blowing away a rock with the intention of boosting through where it was is not a bad use of your action if it clears someone's range 1 firing arc...
