So I was building a fleet today with Admiral Leia and Cham Syndulla, when I had the thought that maybe spending the squadron token for the boarding effect might somehow count as resolving the command. It has the symbol on the card, but I am unclear if it is a resolution of the squadron token, or the card itself that just requires the token to be discarded. Wanted to see if anyone else had encountered this or if I was simply overthinking things.
Leia + Boarding
My $0.02.
It is discard a dial or token which is not resolving a command.
It isn't SQD: Boarding team effect which would be resolving the command.
The Princess-General and Boarding Teams don't really play nice.
The Boarding Team explicitly requires you to spend a Dial or Token and Discard the Card. Its not a resolution of the Order (as it doesn't start with the Order symbol, its just showig the symbol to specify its a Squadron Dial).
If you do so when you Reveal the Dial - you are never actually using the Command - you've discarded the Dial. Because you cannot spend the Squadron Dial on a Command, you cannot get the "Token Bonus" from the Princess-General.
You end up with No Dial, No Command, to use the Troopers/Engineers.
She plays fine. You just plan for it earlier and bank a Squad token on an earlier turn.
Or put a Veteran Captain on the ship. Reveal Dial -- Vet Cap for squad token -- Pop the boarding team in question discarding just gained token -- Leia up a dial +token command.
Hinging of course on whether discarding a dial or token counts as a command resolution which I don't think it does.
Of course
- my point of "play nice" was that they do not directly interact in a positive way with each's ability...
Not to say they don't work.
You have to either not utilise the ability of the Princess-General at one at one point (by banking the token earlier), or compensate with some other points based interaction in order to do it.
Princess-General + Boarding Troopers + Squad Dial + Pre-Banked Token = Boarding Trooper Smash followed by Squadron Mayhem on the Token-flipped Target. And it is
awesome
. Its just an extended interaction ability rather than "I get to do it all with a single Dial flip"
Thanks for the discussion and clarification!
That was what I assumed- I can bank a SQ token round 1 and then Princess General away till it comes time to ditch that token without an interruption in my suped up commands.
Ok... and amendment to this question, what about other upgrades like Engine techs. Has the same symbol. If my Leia Commanded ship reveals Con Fire, and I resolve the dial with the Leia Token and then discard the token to utilize engine techs, as long as I do not use the token to resolve the command? It's a stretch, and I am assuming discarding the nav token would preclude me from using the Leia effect, but I had to ask because that super sucks.
Help me @Drasnighta wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.
The Difference is, the Symbol at the start of the line, like with Engine Techs, means "Resolve THIS COMMAND".
You don't have to Discard a Token.
You get to do it when you are resolving that command .
Resolving the Command is one of the following.
Using the Dial
Using a Token
Using the combined effect of a Dial and Token.
you do not discard a Token to use Engine Techs. You resolve the Command. This gives you the benefit of the command (such as a Nav Token's Speed Change), and allows you to Engine Tech as an additional Benefit.
Dras already covered it (as did I) but see page five of the RRG under effect use and timing:
"Effects with a command icon as a header, such as “M:,” can be resolved once while the ship is resolving the matching command "
It is also on page 21 of the Learn to play guide under Using Upgrade Cards.
So any of the support team upgrades like Engine Techs and Engineering Team are going to trigger/provide opportunity if the command Leia is augmenting is the command in their text. But you won't be able to use a banked Nav token to JUST get the Engine Tech benefit while using Leia on a CF dial.
The various boarding teams do not use that format. They are not triggered on resolving the matching command. Having a dial or token to discard is the cost but is not the resolution of a command.
If Engine Techs said "Discard a Nav token and exhaust this card after you execute a maneuver to perform a speed 1 maneuver" you'd be "good." But that isn't how it works and is specifically stated in the RRG.
