AUX - Trying out the U-Wing

By millsbr91, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been wanting to fly a list with the U-Wing since it has sat on my shelf since I bought it. To start the match, I will fly in formation. Biggs will r2-f2 and then Jyn should be able to give him at least 1 focus. Cassian can use his action for Jyn because he will get his modification from FCS and expertise. Not to mention, FCS+Expertise+Finn should put out consistent 4 hit attacks, all the while stress Braylen does what stress Braylen does. Cassian's ability also helps Braylen clear his stress.

Let me know your thoughts. I'm planning to test this tonight at my local store's weekly league.

U-Wing: · Cassian Andor (27)
Expertise (4)
Fire Control System (2)
· Finn (5)
· Jyn Erso (2)
Pivot wing (0)
ARC-170: · Braylen Stramm (25)
· R3-A2 (2)
Gunner (5)
Alliance Overhaul (0)
X-Wing: · Biggs Darklighter (25)
· R2-F2 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)
-- TOTAL ------- 100/100p. --

How do you plan to fly this? Presumably Braylen will be in front of Biggs, but where will Cassian be?

Having flown a Heff/Norra/Biggs list a lot, I'll tell you that you might struggle to get the U-Wing in a good position after the initial engagement. Flipping it around with the title isn't always the default choice.

I have had this thought myself. My initial thought was Cassian would fly inside since he only has a 2 hard and the others have 3s. But having not flown the U-Wing before, I really think I just need to get it on the table and make some mistakes and figure it out on the fly. The league is quite casual so it's the perfect place to test it out.

Any advice on flying the U?

I've only flown Heff (in the list below), which would be a good deal different than Cassian. With Heff, I'd just jam him into the fray and how he gets turned around would vary depending on where everyone was. With Cassian & Co., you'd probably fly him fast after the initial encounter, flipping the title to the Landing side for a 0-stop the next turn. But...that would also be pretty predictable, so you might fake with the title flip, but actually do something like a hard 2 to slowly come around. Also, I really don't know about Expertise on him, because I think you'll be turning it off on your own with the 0-stop more than you'd expect....probably 2-4 times a game.

Maybe consider Engine Upgrade on him? That can get him turned around quicker plus can get him out of dodge or after someone.

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R3-A2 (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Heff Tobber (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Seismic Torpedo (2)
Jyn Erso (2)
"Zeb" Orrelios (1)
Tactical Jammer (1)
Pivot Wing (0)

Norra Wexley (29)
Push the Limit (3)
Tail Gunner (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Vectored Thrusters (2)
Alliance Overhaul (0)

Total: 99

I like Heff or the BSP myself. I also think Hera is almost essential to the U wing. Fire control systems, and another cheap crew of your liking.

Fly it like a big a$$ blocker, which it is.

What about switching expertise to adrenaline rush? But then I don't know what to do with the 3 extra points. I don't really want munitions. Counter measures maybe?

Honestly, I don't know. Braylen can handle his stress pretty good on his own, so I don't know that Cassian's ability does much for the list. I'm also skeptical how often you'll have things in arc with him, which makes me question the cost of Finn.

You're probably better off just flying it as is and see for yourself how things play out. I've only flown Heff because I've always felt that the U-Wing is best as a bumping support ship. To really make use of Cassian, you want wingmen who will pile up stress, but don't have a good way to shed it on their own.
