The truth of the Jumpmaster.

By KCDodger, in X-Wing

It needs fixing. You know why it needs fixing?

Because there are at least two threads a day talking about the damned thing, guys. About all the wrongs, the rights. Look, last wave I invested in was the one with K-Wings, I've been pretty financially stretched. But let's just... Think about this.

If you guys are really talking about this stupid toilet bowl this much.

Something about it is worth discussion. Considering it's had three meta-defining things going on around it? Yeah. Yeah, it's the freakin Jumpmaster that's broken.

So please, for the love of Talos, stop denying it is. If it wasn't, would it be THE hot button topic FOR THIS LONG?

Nothing was changed about Soontir, he was talk about as long. ;-)

Soontir was pushed out by power creep (mostly scum). It looks like the jumpmaster is getting pushed out by bombers.

And you can still find two posts a day about interceptors as well XD

It doesn't look like that at all to me. It looks like Jumpmasters and Biggs will be about the only things able to stand UP to bombers, not to mention the fact that Cad Bane allows one jumpmaster per list to BE a bomber, and a spectacularly effective one at that, with a longer and more flexible reach even than the bloody K Wing (once, using Burnout SLAM, then only a mildly worse reach thereafter).

Is it very strong? Yes.

Is it broken? Not anymore.

The multitude of threads (including this one) does not indicate anything except some people need to spend more time outdoors...

It's still broke.

I kinda see it akin to a ship that caused crazed typing due to it's outlandish ability before I delved into the X-Wing realm: the TIE Phantom/Fat Han meta.

Difference is, they easily corrected the Phantom with timing as that was her only OP power. Fat Han was ignored even though he pulled off World's and quietly went away due to other mat influences (Han always was a lucky dog). The problem with the Jumpmaster is they designed it's core too good. And, up to this point, FFG refuses to nerf core elements of a ship. They will not re-issue dials for it costs too much to make and mail them out, so that broken dial stays. They will not change Pilot card squad costs because reprinting and reissuing those too costs money, so that broken squad cost stays. They will not reduce modification slots as that too causes pilot card issues, so that broken stat line stays.

So either FFG stops with their hopes the ship gets balanced by nature without dice creep making every ship pre-Wave 8 unplayable, or they actually give a crap about the game and bring the Jumpmaster back down to good as they did with the Phantom.

It's actually that simple. I have two friends who are in the know that say it's coming....but no amount of beer has opened their lips yet.

They have FAQed upgrade cards and pilot abilities before (Manaroo for instance). They could easily change squad cost/upgrade bar/frame values.

I see a flaw in your plan. If their lips won't open; they can't drink the beer! Have you considered a gin drip?

Now that you mention it, I have honestly never seen them put their pints to their lips....but the beer disappears and they become of good cheer. Perhaps they are Jedi, hummmmmm?

I'm hoping (but not really expecting :( ) that this will be the solution they choose. There really doesn't seem to be any other way to address the issue except errata-ing the dial which seems unlikely to happen.

Playtesters can get in real trouble for breaking their NDAs, best not to pry. Or at least, if you succeed, don't tell anyone.

Or maybe vampires?

Errataing points is in the abstract the best way to fix something because ultimately it is the points that is wrong. But FFG and other game companies rarely do this for the reason that it can invalidate a list someone brings to the table. Bad enough "hey, Manaroo works like this now" but at least you can still field the same list. Figuring out before (or halfway through!) a game an upgrade is illegal is worse ("yeah deadeye can't go on a big ship now"). But there's a whole other kettle of worms if you found out the points values weren't even right. Given that FFG has gone through absolute hoops to bring points adjustments in through the back door without actually changing points values (looking at you, chaardaran refit), I can't see it happening. Likewise changing upgrade bar or frame values seems unlikely, otherwise they could have dropped the phantom down to firepower 3 way back when it was a major issue.

the fact that it keeps finding another way to be the lynch pin in so many scum lists AFTER being nerfed so many times kinda speaks volumes how broken it the **** thing is.

I blame either the dial or the price. If it was 4-5pts more, it wouldnt be as popular since it cant squeeze in these magical and ridiculous 3ship lists without sac'ing something vital (you know what every rebel/imp player has to do to mix more than 2 of our powerhouse ships?) OR if its dial was actually a hindrance (no white sloop, no right sloop, right turns are red) instead of easily THE best dial in the game on a **** freighter.
Upgrade access, other than the mech, makes sense. But its price and dial dont.

Yeah, you shouldn't try to pressure playtesters into spilling the beans. My rule is that I never ever ask them to tell me anything. I'll take it if they're willing to share something, but pushing them is just wrong and unfriendly towards them- they signed contracts with serious monetary penalties for breaking it, you're trying to get them in trouble.

Sounds like witchcraft to me. Are these players from Dathomir?

Totally wrong. Jumpmaster is still broken. I hardly ever played the Jumpmaster and never played the Worlds List before and took it to Top 4 of a 45 person Store Champ, you know who I lost to in the Top 4? Joe Desmond who was also running Dengar. That tourney was probably the easiest one I've ever been too. The Jumpmaster seriously needs to be fixed.

Last tournament I played in there was 3 Dengar in the room and they finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

At least I got highest non-Dengar player, though, right?057

Any chance you have the full list of all competitors and their lists?

If hardly anyone shows up with a Rebel or Imperial list, seeing Scum in the winner's circle is not such a surprise.

That's the success ranking of all squads in all tournaments played in the last month (as recorded on listjuggler).

Actually, perhaps more accurately...
