Lack of Wookiee love?

By Irishrover13, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I am new to the game and I play rebels. I am wondering why people don't seem excited for the new Wookie ship?

It can't turn, which is a big issue for a lot of people. The YV and the U-Wing don't see a lot of play almost because of that issue (or, it is at least the most frequent complaint about them).

It is also occupying similar design space to Biggs, something that most Rebel players are tired of. Rebel players, by and large, don't really want to fly Biggs (in my experience). He's just too good to not fly is the issue. So, the fact that this new ship either tries to be a less effective Biggs, or works best alongside Biggs is pretty disappointing to a lot of people.

There is also the fact that it is going to suffer on attack. With the news for the Reinforce action most of the time, it won't have offensive mods. And in this day and age of needing 3dice+TL+Focus, they may not do all that much damage, durable as they may be.

Its also not what a lot of people have wanted. A lot of Rebel players are holding out for an X-Wing fix, which this is not (though it could be leaving the way for one).

It is also a relatively unknown ship from all of, what, three-four episodes (tops) of a cartoon, rather than, say, a relatively unknown ship from a novel or a beloved video game. :P

On that note however, I am super excited for it. I love the idea of Reinforce, and I think that the Rebels do need a replacement for Biggs, something that Lowhrick will do beautifully. It's actually the TIE Aggressor that I'm least excited for this wave, and I'm a mostly Imperial player. Unlike the Aggressor, the Gunship and Bomber both being new things to the game, shaking up the way we play. On the other hand, the Aggressor is the lackluster one, which can be best summed up as "here is the new, same as the old."

Finally, it could just be that people aren't excited for this wave. The bomber looks cool, but the consensus seems to be that the other two are underwhelming in the extreme.

I'm pretty hyped for it. :) I've got a couple of squads in mind already...

Wookiee Squadron

Chewbacca (42)
Rage (1)
Gunner (5)
Inspiring Recruit (1)

Kashyyyk Defender (24)
Wookiee Commandos (1)

It's not super competitive, but it is three pretty durable ships that can put out a moderate amount of damage. Plus there's a minimum of 8 Wookiees involved if you go by pilot names and card art...

Biggs to the max

Lowhhrick (28)
Selflessness (1)
Jan Ors (2)
Jyn Erso (2)
Experimental Interface (3)

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-D2 (4)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Nera Dantels (26)
Deadeye (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Extra Munitions (2)
Guidance Chips (0)

Total: 100

Biggs gets a minimum of two evades on the opening exchange (thanks to Jan and Lowhhrick's ability), and Lowhhrick can pull more damage off him if needs be. This makes R2-D2 potentially viable on Biggs and might make him last an annoyingly large amount of time. Meanwhile, Nera can happily fire off Proton Torpedoes at anything that comes in range, safe in the knowledge that she's really unlikely to die before she's got both of her probably double criting torpedoes away.

Added bonus, everyone's PS 5, so you can move things in the order that best suits you.

Honestly Lowhhrick with Jyn/Jan/EI/EPT of choice couples with a R2-D2/IA Biggs will be crazy good. But also boring AF. I won't be buying this ship, personally, because that combo is all I'd use it for. I want something exciting for Rebels, more stuff like the Scurgg.

I'm excited for it, I just don't bother theory crafting until I own the ship. I don't want to pine for a ship/card/combo for months.

How about Lowhrick with R2-D2 (crew), C-3PO, PTL, and Shield Upgrade? Basically Fat Han level of durability, but for ~40 points. Pair him with Biggs, and Red Ace with Comms Relay, and you get a squad that will take a very long time to kill.

A lot of people seem to think this ship will just result in any match just going to time as its team won't have the punch to burn down the opposition, but has the durability to just take hits through last round. I'm not sure I buy that, but if accurate it doesn't sound fun for either side.

This seems like a pain in the butt.

Lowhhrick (28)
Predator (3)
Jan Ors (2)
"Zeb" Orrelios (1)

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R4-D6 (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Norra Wexley (29)
Push the Limit (3)
Tail Gunner (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Vectored Thrusters (2)
Alliance Overhaul (0)

Or just resign Lowhhrick's damage output to be low, but neigh impossible to wipe the list. Oh man, yeah...this is a "go to time" list if I've ever seen one.

Lowhhrick (28)
Draw Their Fire (1)
Jan Ors (2)
C-3PO (3)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

Something I realized is targeting computer is only 2 points, and so is Rey. Fly with Biggs in formation, slow roll and bank focuses on Rey. Once you get into combat, Biggs should provide initial cover so you can get two target locks up with Weps Engineer. From there, you can reinforce each turn, already have target locks, and assign focusses from Rey.

OR, drop Rey, put on expertise, and in Rey's place put some other crew that could be useful. I like the idea gennataos put above of Jan Ors.

And 36 points are left for a third ship, or 2 swarm style ships.

From (Yet Another) X-Wing Miniatures Squad Builder:

Biggs Darklighter — X-Wing 25
R2-D6 1
Selflessness 1
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 27
Wullffwarro — Auzituck Gunship 30
Trick Shot 0
Rey 2
Weapons Engineer 3
Targeting Computer 2

Ship Total: 37

A cheaper option using PTL to reinforce and TL each turn could be, with 39 points left over:

From (Yet Another) X-Wing Miniatures Squad Builder:

Biggs Darklighter — X-Wing 25
R2-D6 1
Selflessness 1
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 27
Lowhhrick — Auzituck Gunship 28
Push the Limit 3
Wookiee Commandos 1
Targeting Computer 2
Ship Total: 34

TLDR: Targeting computer is only 2 points, and likely dramatically increases the offense of the Gunship, but you should also find ways to reinforce each turn.

Because people dpnt pull your arms out of their sockets when they love

Wookies are known to do that

It'll see play, but it's not going to be top of the heap. It can't turn, and for a ship without a turret that's a pretty big deal.

Low Rick Er (is a little slower)

*c3po + rey + crackshot

Biggs

*r4d6 integrated

Miranda

*TLT, bombetts, sabine and longrange scanners

Oh father, please forgive me the sins i have unleashed upon the coming metas

I can seriously see people quitting the game over this infuriating ****
