I read this morning that they left due to 'creative differences' with only a few weeks left of filming. Another article stated they were fired by Kathleen Kennedy for the same reasons.
Regardless. I have zero interest in a Han solo film. The character is much more intriguing off screen.
The idea of a "young Han Solo" film is pretty terrible.
It has already been made, it was Called "Star Wars".
also, Han not being played by Harrison Ford? Goddam blasphemy.
I am looking forward to seeing how Han Solo meets Chewbacca, how Chewbacca owes him a life debt, and how he ends up with the Falcon. I'm not sure how that fills out a movie that can follow how well they pulled off Rogue One though. New director(s) will probably mean new story changes and significant reshoots. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie's release gets pushed back a few more months, possibly even to December. Ep 8 followed 5 months later by the Han Solo movie seemed a bit too close between releases anyway to me.
Probably the conflicts have come in the editing room as they often do.
Directors pulling out is kind of a big deal. I trust Kathleen Kennedy though. I think she'll pull it off.
They appointed Ron Howard this morning. He is certainly competent.
but he was in early pre-production on Seveneves, so that'll get pushed back. Boo!
Edited by TasteTheRainbowWhat if this was all orchestrated and planned from Day 1?
To generate conversation, interest and awareness of the film, they switch out Directors (stating "creative differences" - what does that mean exactly? It doesn't damage the previous Director's reputation and we are all fine with that reasoning) and swap them for a named known fellow. "Oh yeah, Ron Howard, I've heard f that guy .. who were the former Directors again? Never heard of them. Glad they made THAT move!".
But here we are. Talking about the film. Building awareness. "No Conandoodle, we'd never be conned into generating free marketing for this product". Wouldn't we? Do you recall the buzz around Rogue One requiring to re-shoot extra scenes late in it's production .. that also generated conversation.
Maybe I'm on to something here.

I'm pretty much exactly the opposite. We already KNOW the broad strokes of how those things happened, I don't feel any need to see them on screen. I'd prefer to see something like this:
We open on young Lando throwing down his Sabacc cards in disgust and flinging the keys (or whatever) to the Falcon at Han. Then Han goes off and has an entirely new adventure in which he meets and interacts with ABSOLUTELY NOBODY we know about from Star Wars previously. We close with Han having succeeded (or heroically failed, demonstrated his willingness to compromise on roguishness for honour's sake or whatever) in whatever he was doing (heist movie? con game? bounty hunt gone wrong? I don't know), getting into a bar fight or something, and shooting someone who he thought was shooting at him... then getting a big giant hug from Chewbacca, roll credits.
Bookend with things we do know as short, almost offhand references, and tell us a story we DON'T already know in the middle.
It's a big universe, I want to see MORE of it, not stuff we know already.
I'd agree
Part of the problem is how you tell the story. After all, one important thing to note is that episodes IV and V are kind of Han's redemption story - at the start of IV he is really not a good person - he's a drug smuggler and casual murderer. Lando is at least trying to do something legitimate with his life when Executor parks up in orbit, at which point what the hell is he supposed to do?.
Since we don't know (in the new canon) han's background, we don't know how he's going to meet/save chewie.
We knew before watching Rogue One that they'd get the plans for the death star, but it was still an interesting story- because of the unexpected bits they threw into a story you already thought you knew - to the point that it actually improves the enjoyment of the following film
The question, then, is what similar things do you want to 'flesh out' on the criminal/western Han Solo side of the story. By all means tell the story of saving chewie or winning the falcon or both as side threads, but make story something that stands on its own merit. Equivalent plot points in Episode IV that could probably do with fleshing out that might make a nice standalone story:
Watching Rogue One then A New Hope really racks up the tension of just how scary the empire and death star are, and how desperate the rebels are. Similarly, watching [Han Solo Title] and then A New Hope could really show how rock bottom and desperate Han was, and just how scummy and villainous a place he'd ended up in.
Remember, it's not really a "young han solo"; Harrison Ford was 29 at the date of release of A New Hope (born 1942, release 1977), the same age that Alden Ehrenreich will be (born 1989, release 2018). So theoretically it could run right up to just before the bar, including "Dumping the spice".

OR .. go one step further and NOT show a movie about an established character altogether. You're very right. We've seen enough of Han to know a bit about his backstory and what we don't know we can fill in ourselves. It's a big universe, let's see some stories from other parts with characters who are new. Let's create some new Han Solos.
In regards to the deathstar fatal flaw, I feel like a lot of people misunderstood what Galen did.
People assume he is responsible for the exhaust port, but that's not the case. He just made the reactor unstable so to speak so if someone analyzing the plans found a way to damage it they could destroy the whole station.
The exhaust port leading right to it and being big enough for a proton torpedo to travel along it was a lucky break for the rebellion.

It's the novelization that has him using reverse psychology to get the exhaust port built - shown in memos - he presents it as the fastest (but least safe for people living near it on the Death Star - in terms of radiation) option - recommends the other slow options - and his supervisor says "I'm not delaying this project while you try to figure out how to keep stormtroopers from getting runny noses" - and forces the "exhaust port" option through - which is exactly what he wants.
At the end of the book - right before the Death Star fires on Scarif - Krennic figures out exactly what happened - but it's too late for him to do anything about it.
They hired two guys with a reputation for the comedies, and complained afterwards that they made the movie too funny.
Now they will do reshoots to make it more grim and sarcastic, better suiting the character and using less improvised dialog for Han.
I heard they made a comedy film instead of the heist movie they were supposed to, they'll need to essentially reshoot the entire film.
If this delays the film until December, I'm okay with that. I've grown accustomed to a Winter opening since I have more time to go see the movies a couple of times.

I always just reference this for the death star exhaust port complaint.

Oh, absolutely that too. But given the premise of 'we're making a Han Solo film'...
I'm sure they will create some new characters. This is a new star wars film, and Disney will not miss the opportunity to create new worlds, characters and ships that they can merchandise via this game, lego, computer games, whatever.
Or, for that matter, connect in to other bits of star wars cannon (I'm not sure my stomach is ready for a live action Azmordigen, but an underworld film could at least in passing pass nods to Vizago, or Black Sun, or Hondo).
My speculation is they thought that Han Solo was the star of his own movie but the suits wanted to know where Rey was.
Looks like I'm totally off base on my speculation. Lord and Miller were not sticking to the script and Alden Ehrenreich is a bad actor.
