The Rising Wave (Dragon Fiction)

By Joe From Cincinnati, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Sorry, just a couple thoughts about Togashi Yokuni. When dealing with major problems within the clan he spoke in riddles. I mean when teaching children is one thing. When dealing with famine, cults, and curses it is far less helpful. This implies some really odd ideas at least to me.

1- He is afraid to interfere with his own clan. Either for old Togashi reasons or new ones.

2- He either knows or trusts that what's his name will make the right decision.

3- He is infirm or rarely lucid, and incapable of making most decisions for the clan. (somehow I doubt this one)

4- The Daimyo needs to learn something valuable enough to risk famine, cults, and curse.

5- That he does not care.

Did I miss any?

This just popped up in my mind..... If Yokuni is simply a former Togashi monk and not Togashi-no-kami himself..... No more Hoshi or Satsu.... But if this Yokuni is a mortal, it makes for more interesting stories of Dragon involvement.

We are unsure yet what direction they are going.

You forgot "Well, I've been doing this for so long, I've forgotten how to give a straight answer".

"What is a straight answer?" -Yokuni

"What isn't?" -Mitsu

"Just answer the f'ing question." -Sashashiforgettable

I more imagine Yokuni thinking to himself. "Man, I have a problem. Why can't I give him a useful answer? Is there something wrong with me?" but never doing anything about it. Since he is unable to directly ask for help.

Assuming Yokuni is Togashi ... they are children to him. No matter how old in human terms.

Also, subset of #2, but I feel like it gets overlooked; Yokuni knows not just that they will do the right thing eventually, but that the initial confusion is part of walking the path he wishes to set them on.

I honestly hope he doesn't know for sure this time around. The vision he had during their meeting implies he does not know all and see all like last time.

There was literally 100% more crabs in this fiction than in either of the two that came before it. I don't know what you're complaining about. ;)

Hida Sozen for emperor!!! ... oops, too soon?

(For new players: Hida Sozen was originally a member of the Dragon Clan)

coolness and relevance

Dragon wisdom is vastly over-rated. Making sense to yourself is easy; it's making sense to others that is hard.

I worry that this is in a pillow book. You don't go to pillow books for words of wisdom.

Better to understand the fathers of their champions. (Kinda sucks that this might not be relevant trash talk in new5r)

It's far too soon to give up hope:)

I believe you misspelled Kisada.

So they're all civil servants?

That actually made me think of a newspaper joke. 'People who read the Imperial Herald don't care who the sun is as long as she's on page 3.'

Sorry, but was this the character that had a vision, went to the wall and defended it with the Crab, then "disappeared" sometime later?

Abridged version:

Hida Sozen was originally Mirumoto Sozen, a Dragon Clan hostage sent to the Crab that then swore allegiance to the Crab Clan. He gained enlightenment during Lotus Edition and was chosen by the Crab Clan to be emperor during the Crab Clan council at GenCon before the Race for the Throne. (I was actually there, and he was chosen because he was enlightened, was really hard to kill/assassinate, and because it was believed that the Dragon would support the Crab's claim if we won based on our choice.) I actually lost track of him after this because life caused me to not be able to keep up with the fictions. Needless to say, he wasn't the emperor. :(

Fun fact: Hida Kisada wasn't chosen because it was discussed that he had his chance to be emperor and we also felt that him being the Fortune of Persistence was a cool enough job for him already. If my memory serves, we were also worried he'd meet an especially bad end if he failed again in the Race for the Throne. Kisada was eventually killed off in Death at Koten any way.

If by making the Sun a Page 3 girl, I think you're referring to Hida Yakamo.
