Are Backstabber and Mauler Mither worth their point?

By devotedknight, in X-Wing

Snap shot triggers during the activation phase when someone else moves into arc at range 1. Once it's triggered, you can't use it again during that activation phase. It has no effect on your ability to shoot in the combat phase.

I hear snap shot is "good" on Mauler. I've ALWAYS been completely unimpressed with counting on naked reds to do me damage. Especially in light of recent power spikes that make it common for my opponents to just nautrally roll 2 evades minimum every roll. I dont' even believe in blaming luck, but wow. Unimpressed.

If it's triggered they haven't acted yet so it's your naked dice vs. thier naked dice most of the time. If they did get tokens then they might burn them before combat and that also has value. With Mauler at PS 7 Snapshot is odd since you want to be in place first but with planning and flying I've had moderate success.

The real fun comes if you can fit Operations Specialist and a swarm leader in: everyone takes evaded for def and swarm leader fuel, missing Snap shots generates focus tokens, lots of dice being thrown around.

Yes you get to shoot 2+1 red dice in activation and 2+1+1 in combat. When it happens it's amazing value.

So wait, let me get this straight, of all the Mauler/Backstabber lists suggested here, not a single one contains Vader? Warning, this list may contain thematic content:

Battle of Yavin (100)

Darth Vader (31)

Veteran Instincts (1)

TIE/x1 (0)

Advanced Targeting Computer (5-4=1)

Mauler Mithel (20)

Crack Shot (1)

Targeting Computer (2)

Backstabber (18)

Targeting Computer (2)

"Wampa" (16)

Targeting Computer (2)

Black Squadron Pilot (15)

Crack Shot (1)

Edit: yes I see the Vader crew, and no, that doesn't count! :D

Triple post. No, seriously, the buttons can misbehave something awful some days.

"You cannot modify your attack dice and cannot attack again this phase"

That doesn't mean you can't shoot during combat? Or is it meant to mean you can only use the ability once per turn when a ship flies by?

Once per phase means you can only use it once during the activation phase.

Shooting is a different phase, so his normal attack is not impeded.

I have a similar list I want to try, with the full Yavin roster (which, sadly, doesn't include Wampa - he was at Endor, and that's an MC-80, not the death star, in the background).

  • Darth Vader - TIE/x1, Swarm Leader, Engine Upgrade
  • Mauler Mithel - Trick Shot
  • Backstabber
  • Dark Curse
  • Chaser

Dark Curse and Chaser are nice because they can afford to evade as their action and 'give up' the evade to fuel Vader's Swarm Leader talent - Dark Curse because whilst he only gets unmodified green dice, so (normally) does the opponent, whilst Chaser can 'snag' a focus token off someone else when they spend it.

Unmodified red dice aren't amazing, but neither are unmodified greens, and that's the deal snap shot normally offers. Plus, you want mithel to be at range 1 anyway, so it's just a nice bonus.

Darn! I thought I'd read he was at Yavin. Good catch!

Have all the Yavin TIE Fighters been released now? In the old canon there were only seven TIEs and Vader, right? I know the new Wookieepedia site doesn't have any information on them now. We know Vader, Mithel, and Backstabber, and I seem to recall hearing about Dark Curse and Chaser, but I think there's still three more... do you know who they are?

You have the SF, in which case those 36pts can be spent much more efficiently.

Behold,

" Quickdraw " — TIE/sf Fighter 29
Adaptability 0
Fire-Control System 2
Pattern Analyzer 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 35

Hey Keff, that's my go to "Quickdraw" build. Why let this secret out? ;)

That's... actually amazing. Going to take a second look at Snap Shot from now on :)

Thanks for clarifying.

Happy to help! Even more happy that for once my explanations made enough sense to be useful for a change. ;)

We Imperials need all the love we can get at the moment. :P

On Thursday I ran Mauler and Scourge with VI alongside Rexlar and Pure Sabacc.

They were great fun to use. Scourge was knocked out relatively early due to my positioning, but Mithel was a nasty little thing that distracted my opponent just enough. Definitely using them again.
