Elrad's Path to Knowledge and Wisdom

By Elrad, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Greetings everyone,

I here begin my personal topic where I'll ask every single question that come to my mind about this game (instead of starting hundred threads separately.

My first question has been asked before. I know, I did a research....that gave me 6 full pages of threads to read... and while browsing the two first one, I found out that my question is somehow partialy asked there, so there we are :

This game, when I read the articles, does look (a lot to me) like Game of Thrones LCG... So, my question is : as far as we know now, how does L5R LCG differs from AGoT 2nd edition ? Aside from the theme, of course... Take in consideration that I have no experience in AGoT 2nd and just have a bunch of 1St edition cards at home but never went into it...

Thanks !

The whole Fate/fading mechanic is a big difference. Characters don't stick around. Also, I believe the Rings mechanic is new as well.

Is the card draw bidding new? I have not seen it in other games.

2 Decks is relatively different. Most games only have the one, or has one minor one?

(PS, I don't play AGOT, so there are probably more differences)

I'll give my best shot

  1. Multiple Victory conditions - Thrones has only 1 way to win, get 15 power. L5R has Honor, Military, and Dishonor.
  2. Multiple play decks - Thrones plays with a single deck (yes they have a plot deck but thats not really a play deck). L5R has a dynasty and conflict deck which each contains different types of cards.
  3. Characters have different strengths - In Thrones, Jamie Lanister is just as good at intrigue as he is at Military. In L5R, Akodo Toturi is much better at Military than he is at politics but can still participate in both.
  4. Much more varied conflict types - In thrones you choose Military, Intrigue, or Power and thats it. In L5R you choose which of the 5 rings and then whether its military or political.
  5. True simultaneous turns - Thrones I do my marshalling and then you do yours. I do my challenges, you do yours. L5R I recruit one guy, you recruit 1 guy, I recruit 1 guy, you recruit 1 guy, etc.

I could probably go further, but honestly, they are more different than similar. If you exclude the similarities that would also apply to other games, you probably wouldn't be able to name one thing they have in common.

Thanks to both of you for your answers

@JRosen9 you gave a very good shot for me, thanks ^_^

In addition to those already mentioned there is one that stems from the reason most people say that L5R is like AGoT2: The conflict types. AGoT2 has Military, Intrigue, and Power conflicts. L5R has Military and Political conflicts. The urge to compare the two is strong but the big difference is in the Rings of L5R.

MIL, INT, and POW conflicts all have predefined effects - character death, card loss, and power gain for the winner (I think these are right - I haven't played it in a while). In L5R the effect is separate from the conflict type (MIL or POL) and is instead dependent on the Ring chosen for the conflict. The ring cannot typically be chosen a second time in a round - which happens if a conflict ends in 0-0 "tie." So that limits the effect to once per round - discounting other card effects.

Lastly, should the attacker win then they can trigger the ring effect. If the defender wins the ring effect is not triggered - another difference with AGoT (IIRC).

@tobinator thank you for your answer. I have a clearer idea now, thanks guys.

I'm a fan of Netrunner, I played the now dead Wharammer conquest and now I didn't want to invest in AGoT 2nd because I owe, as mentioned above, quite a few cards from 1ed that I still ask myself how to get rid of it now so that's why L5R is interesting me.
