Recommendations for a Investigator

By FelixPhoenix, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I will like to play a Sherlock (BBC one) type Togruta Investigator Jedi, and will like to a for the character. I wanted to start as an Investigator and dip into Shien Expert for protection plus that lightsaber form is very "Sherloesque", detecting adversary's weaknesses and then exploiting them.

So my questions will be: Besides Cunning and maybe Str for Shien do I need to heavily invest into another Characteristic like Intellect, Willpower or maybe Agility?

Which skills should be my focus besides Perception, Vigilance, Streetwise, Underworld & Lightsaber? Maybe Knowledge, Education, Athletics, Coordination?

Which Force Powers: Sense, Seek, Bind, Enhance, Foresee? Maybe Influence, Misdirect?

PS It will start as a padawan level pbp game and then move into a bimonthly live session.

Sorry for the volume of questions...

If he is to be similar to sherlock, i'd give him a high intellect, possibly higher than cunning. Willpower is always useful for jedi, so i'd concentrate on willpower, intellect and brawn, but that last one is optional as you can raise it later with dedication if needed.Or the Enhance power.

As for skills, go overboard with all the knowledge skills. Drop athletics and/or coordination and invest in skulduggery, for various tricks and a good disguise. Charm, negotiation and coercion might be very useful too, for the social checks,

Tbh i don't see the need to invest in shien expert, at least not immediately. Focus first on the investigator spec.

As for force powers i think the essentials are Sense, Influence, and seek. Forsee is nice but not essential at the start i think. Misdirect might be useful but again not a priority.

Don't forget a decent gear, that reconstruct the scene talent is far away on the talent tree and you need a way to get clues. I suggest a good bioscanner /hand scanner and the forensic kit you find in far horizons.

If you want to make Sherlock Jedi then you will want to go Cunning Intellect Willpower

Skills should be Perception Vigilance Streetwise, Underworld, Education Lightsaber Coordination Xenology Lore Skullduggary Coercian

Force Powers: Farsight Sense Seek Enhance Foresee Warde's Foresight Ebb/Flow

Specs: Investigator Shien Teacher or Seer, Sentry (Teacher is for consulting detective Sherlock, Seer is for more pro active sherlock)

Willpower, intellect, cunning. Get the Shien Style so you can use light saber based off cunning and go to town Mr. Holmes.

I would still recommend bringing your Togruta's Brawn up to 2 no matter where you put your other points. The extra Soak and WT are nice, and with Shien, you'll have three Brawn-linked skills. Raise Cunning to 4, and you'll still have enough XP to raise any one other characteristic (I'd go with Intellect, but you might prefer Willpower or another characteristic) to 3. That'll cost a total of 90 XP, leaving you with 10-20 XP depending upon what starting option you've selected.

Thank you guys for your responses.

I think I got my character nailed down with your advices regarding skills, force powers and specs. My only comment to you guys will be for characteristics:

It is a better solution for this concept to start with Brawn 2, Cunning 3, Intellect 3, Will 3 or Brawn 2, Cunning 4, Intellect or Will 3? I know it takes a while to improve them so I want to focus in characteristics first.

I think the choice of making a characteristic a 4 or not depends on both your vision and the group dynamic. If you want your character more focused and perceptive, the 4 is a good choice. If your group is fairly diverse with respect to character strength and weakness, and your high Cunning would help stand out and give the group one more area of high competence, it's a good choice.

On the other hand, characters who are fairly good (but not great) in a number of different areas can be helpful if your group is hyper-focused (i.e. everyone else is big on combat specs), or if you would like to be more of a support character who can jump into most situations and contribute.

As JRRP said, it has a lot to do with the group you'll be in. In smaller groups the more rounded characters (lots of Characteristics at 3, including the 'primary' Characteristic) work out fairly well, but in larger groups (more than 3 players) I usually see more of the specialized characters (4 or 5 in the 'primary' characteristic) so they stand out more.

Personally, I'd go for B 2, A 2, I 3, C 4, W 2, P 2 but that's just me. Cunning does a lot for an Investigator/Shien Expert, and going this route along with the +10 XP starting option allows you to start with both Specializations if you'd like to (although there's no reason you have to do so) or with 20XP to put into something more immediately useful like a Force Power.

Thanks guys! And I think I'll go with your C4 suggestion. Plus High Cunning and Intellect sounds very "Sherloesque" to me. I will rely on my Watson (Healer/Soresu, if I recall correctly) for Will dependent skills, and is always the choice of improving Will further down the road.

If you're emulating Holmes, you'll want Vigilance, but the other Willpower-linked skills are far less necessary.

Do you think between Keen Eyed and pumping Vigilance ranks shall I be ok?

Absolutely. You don't always need a high Characteristic to be good at something. Skills and Talents can get you there too. I've seen plenty of Force users with Willpower 2 backed up with Discipline 3+, and they work out just fine. In your case, it'll be Vigilance rather than Discipline, but it'll work the same way.

Thanks!
