PbP Concept

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

So, given we have been hired as bodyguards, I've decided to pick Protector/Martial Artist for my build. Working on the crunchy bits of background and mechanics.

Sounds good! That means I've got melee Defense 2, Ranged 1. Thanks, Crow :) .

I know I've never complained before, but Crow, if you must summarize.

No problem at all, Crow. Sorry about that!

BTW, what group resource are we going to pick? If it's Mentor, I'd like to know, so I can purchase Force powers at the proper starting cost. Any votes on that? I'm cool with whatever, but since we aren't going to be doing space stuff, a ship seems less than ideal. So, either holocron or Mentor?

I'm thinking a mentor is the best bet for getting us all together.

I certainly wouldn't mind the xp cost reduction.

Not to be a rule nazi but the rulebook says a mentor only gives a reduced xp cost to force powers after initial character creation. Dang it! But, with the campaign being a short one, maybe a little bending of the rules? Completely up to the GM. I'll be fine either way.

You can always just not spend the xp for the powers until you dip into your Knight Level stuff. Just shift around something of equal XP value that could be bought at creation.

Oooooh. *evil grin as he looks over character sheet*

Hehe, that's one reason why I make a specific column of expenditures for starting xp, and then Knight xp separately. Makes it a lot easier for my brain to remember what can/can't be bought with specific xp.

A Mentor sounds good to me, too. The XP reductions to Knight-level expenditures might influence my decision between the two builds I'm debating between.

By the way, how does character progression work in a PbP? Should we expect periodic XP gains, @Blackbird888 ?

I'm thinking after each 'episode'.

Here is Zik Adid-Yati's background. I haven't integrated it with the rest of the party's yet, but I've left his time on Garuu mostly unaccounted for, so there's lots of room. @Blackbird888 , I don't expect the background elements to play into things (like the Imperial governor showing up or whatever); that's mostly there for color and to help me play him. Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see changed.

Also swapped out Lightsaber ranks for Melee ranks, as I don't think he'd have a lightsaber. He's probably going to want to wield something that does strain damage, anyway.

Age: 34
Homeworld: Chalacta

By the time he was seven, the ancestors had been visiting Zik Adid-Yati for years, appearing in his dreams to teach him mystical techniques long forgotten by the people of Avasatha village. His parents feared for his sanity and apprenticed him to the village griot, hoping that Zik's visions might subside once he got training in storytelling and ancient lore. But learning the tales, legends, proverbs, and parables of his people only deepened Zik's connection to the ancients, while also teaching him how to captivate listeners to reveal to them how such wisdom could direct their lives for the better.

When his master died, Zik became the youngest lore-keeper Avasatha had ever seen. He devoted himself to rebuilding the griot tradition, dying out on much of Chalacta. His charisma and zeal attracted a small but devoted following, to whom Zik espoused the philosophy the ancestors revealed in his dreams: That galactic peace could only come after inner peace.

Word of Zik's teachings spread to the capital city, Jordir. Wary of increased Rebel activity in the Kastolar sector—uprisings on Sneeve, foodstuff smuggling from Durkteel—the Imperial governor decreed that all Chalactans under age 30 must enlist in the planetary defense force. But only a handful of settlements complied. Upon investigation, the Imperial forces found village after village citing the Griot of Avasatha as inspiring them to embrace peace to stop war.

The governor decided to uproot the problem at it source. He charged Zik Adid-Yati with fomenting rebellion. Zik confounded the tribunal by answering their questions with opaque proverbs and fables. But his rhetoric worked; unable to prove treason, the tribunal declared Zik an "Imperial objector" instead. His sentence would be lifelong exile to the planet Garuu, where his teachings could make much less impact.

Zik has only been on Garuu for a few months. With no connections on the world, he has taken to street preaching in a public square for alms to get by. His message has failed to take root on the planet, and he has no real followers. But the ancestors continue to visit him in his dreams. And they say something big is about to happen to him.

I like it, Mr. Bob sir! I can see the beginnings of a connection fermenting, but I'll wait until I have a typed out backstory to fiddle with details.

Looking good, everyone. @SavageBob , I suggest maybe the Peacekeeper from No Disintegrations as a weapon.

I will second Absol197. Love the backstory SavageBob. I'm sure you character and mine probably will have run into each other since they both are trying to eek their way on the planet. Zik preaching for alms and Chadrik doing odd jobs.

So just to clarify before i start working on my guys background, we aren't already established (excluding people who set up linked backgrounds of course) ? This is something of a gathering of individuals under a common job, and most of us will be meeting for the first time as a result?

I think so. Perhaps, if we choose a mentor as our group resource, we all (or at least most of us) came to this world specifically to meet him/her, and the mentor guides us to the adventure.

Obviously I don't have a dog in this race, and you've already began using other means, but just wanted to point out - as I've found it makes things very easy to have it all centrally located - that there's at least one PBP site with built in character sheets and dice roller for this system:

Unfortunately, it's Cumbersome 3 and doesn't seem to have a stun setting. I'm thinking either a basic force pike, a Bardottan electrolance, or a Z6 riot control baton (from DOH) with attachments, so long as they come under the 9,000 credit limit.

That's interesting. Is anybody interested in using this? It seems to be free to use, and it only took me a few minutes to set up an account. I know some don't like the constant clutter PbPs on the forums. Or we can do it here, up to everybody else.

I know at least one of your players already has an account there ;P

It is free, and it's got all the structure for running a PBP built in. Including the ability for you (the GM) to make a dedicated forum for your game, with sub-forum capabilities, and of course hen it's easy to have all the threads you need. These are the kinds of threads I've used;

IC Threads separated for different chapters as the story progresses

OOC Threads

XP Expenditure Tracking thread

Metacurrency/Destiny Point/Morality tracking.

IC and OOC Knowledge/Resource Threads

Obviously a game doesn't require all this infrastructure, but if you can, why not!?

I checked it out. The dice roller and character sheet tools don't seem as robust as the ones we're using now, but it may not matter if their actual PbP setup is nicer than these forums. I haven't figured out how to lurk in an active game to see how the actual play-by-post part works, unfortunately.
