What if we got a 'Echos of the Clone Wars" expansion

By MandoBard, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

So I've seen all the arguments over doing a clone wars themed expansion, and a full Clone wars era expansion is super unlikely, but there are alternatives. FFG has surprised us with some of the themes before, well what if we got an expansion based off the concept of 'lost units'. In Rebel's we see an entire Droid control ship that stayed active post war. It'd be easy to base an expansion off the idea of Rebel's finding a lost battlefield from the clone wars, and finding an army of still-active Droids, either commanded by a separatist(keeping them maintained) or a Commander droid. Technically their affilliation would be Scum, so it'd be a campaign with several(or almost all) scum only missions. Make it a small-box, perhaps with 3 Battle droids, 3 Assassin droids, a Droideka, and a advanced tactician droid. It could branch in two ways, with either the Droids managing to contact mercenaries or the empire intersecting the signal and bringing in an extermination unit(and being the real finale). Blisters could be Captain Rex, Magnaguards, and... I'm not sure, any ideas?

This would be one possible way to throw in a Clone wars nod that would actually merge properly into Imperial assualt, and provide an unique scenario that would be a change of pace.

The idea of having units from the Clone Wars (not just units from the era, like Nexus, but actual CW units like Battle Droids) has been floated around a few times, and I fully support it.

The only problem with a box like this is that the Empire would need something in it, if not just for the Skirmish crowd. Maybe something like this:

Two 2x B1 Battle Droids

Two 2x B2 Battle Droids

Two 1x Droideka

3 Heroes (maybe something like a a Zabrak freedom fighter, a Duros or Kyuzo hacker, or a Kaminoan Cloner)

That would put us at 13 units- a typical smallbox has around 16.

So, for the final few, maybe something like

Two 2x Death Trooper

That way, the Empire has something, and it's something that's remotely related to the Clone Wars (through their introduction in Rogue One, not long after the Clone Wars' end)

Then for blisters, we'll probably want one for each faction, as per usual:

Rebels- Rex (great choice, I think!)

Merc- Embo (If hero is duro) or Cad Bade (if her is Kyuzo)

Imperial- A lot tougher. Would be a great time for Thrawn if we're going to get him. Otherwise, Tarkin is a possibility, too. Only problem with them both is... well, they're not particularly front lines gents. Maybe a new Inquisitor or pair would be good for then, as a sort of Rebels nod to also fill out that era a little.

What would you consider for the setting? A spaceship, like you said? Maybe genonsian caves, too, or a separatist holdout?

@subtrendy2 So, what if The Imp's got the Tactical droid from Rebels(RA-7 series), or the L-1 model? kinda a counterpoint to the fact the expansion is focused on droids, make the Imp blister a Tactical droid. For the blister I mean. Or Agent Kallus perhaps?(yes I'm up to date)

Actually, I just had a better idea for the Imperial choice of box units, what about the infiltrator probe droids? That way you have something that'd make sense as a remote imperial presence. The E-XD infiltrator droid would be perfect twist for a plot. these guys I mean.

Instead of the death troopers you proposed.

Finally, I'd say the box would HAVE to have a Super Tactical droid, I mean you need a command unit with synergy with the droids. So that'd be for the villians:

Scum:

Two 2x B1 Battle Droids

Two 2x B2 Battle Droids

Two 1x Droideka

one Super Tactical Droid

Imp:

Two 1X E-XD Infiltrator droids.

As for setting, perhaps a mix, perhaps an asteroid or a Tropical planet(like felucia perhaps), then Hanger bay/command deck, with the former being a special interior that allows for massive figures. The Idea is a campaign that takes place in the mid to outer rim, with minimal imperial presence (which is why I suggested the Infiltrator droids)

Captain Rex fought for the Republic, not the Rebellion.

*edit

apparently I need to watch Rebels where old man Rex is a regular. Thanks @General Zodd

Until you get to the Rebels show, you're correct! Old man Rex is a regular on that now.

Oh man, droidekas would be awesome! Give them Assault and speed 3 but an extra 5 movement if they spend both their actions on movement. Also something like +2 defence against ranged attacks to simulate the energy shield.

Ooh, @MandoBard, the Infiltrator droid is a perfect idea!

One of the rebel heroes could be a young Gideon Argus as a resistance fighter on his home planet.

Maybe!

Though, unless I'm mistaken, what @MandoBard is trying to do with this is not to create a Clone Wars box, but a box set during the Galactic Civil War that just so happens to use Clone Wars units. Think that battle between Stormtroopers and Battle Droids at Mustafar in the old Battlefront II game, or those episodes in Rebels (you'll know what I'm referring to if you've seen them).

Yep, doesn't clash with the overall theme, and allows for a big alternative finale. Basically depending on the course of the missions, you wind up with the second to final mission having the Infiltrator droids show up. depending on what happens, the finale will be full Droid strength, with merc backup, or an opening appetizer of droids, then a massive Imperial invasion force. Intro mission could be fighting mercs also trying to salvage the war site(Trandoshans from the starter, along with open groups), or raiding a Imperial archives.

And yeah, the entire idea is introducing some CIS units during the OT era as Scum basically. Overall it could be anywhere pre-hoth really(during the dark times I mean)

Oh, I didn't catch that it was "Clone Wars during OT" themed. My bad.

Maybe MagnaGuards as a blister?
I need magnaguards.
And during the clone wars there was many big droids so there will be space vor a 2x3 Mini. ; )

What?

thats awesome. I need to figure out how to watch Rebels. It's a shame that it's not available on disneyxd.

There has also been a running fan theory, given further credence after the most recent Star Wars Celebration, that the white-bearded fellow below has been RetConned to be Rex.

I think it is more of a Dave Filoni theory in that he likes that idea so if he has a say so then that will very much be the case. Still a nice possible tie in and is better than him having a Santa Claus themed/pun name from before.

Haha, Agreed. :)

But yeah, difficult to trace exactly who came up with the idea originally outside of what gets reported ... SlashFilm reported, a couple months back or so, something along the lines of fan theories appearing as early as season 2 of Rebels (It could go as far back as Clone Wars for all I know), but I have no idea and probably won't go chasing reddits to figure it out :). No matter the originator of the idea, Filoni did indeed throw some fuel on the fire:

Quote

"The one thing that I have toyed with and we’ll see how I feel about this, this is probably a spoiler, Carrie Beck, but I gotta give them something. I’ve said absolutely nothing today. And my wife’s like yeah, it’s just like being home. But I think the one thing I have really thought about is I really do think that Rex is that guy on Endor. I really do. Why else is there a bearded old guy on Endor, Tano? Why? It makes no sense. If you don’t want that to happen, do you know what that means? I’m gonna make that happen. I’m getting like Palpatine, I’m getting power crazy."

But then again, he seems to throw fuel on a lot of SW theories.
