Bomb Benders

By Calibri Garamond, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I actually think Sol Sixxa has a lot of potential (not built like this though). For 34 points, with mindlink, intel agent bomblet generator and autoblaster turret that Mere (looks like it is short for ugly mermaid) has got some serious and consistent area denying going on, and he fits nicely between Fenn and Talonbane.

This list is not trying to be competative. It just looks like so much fun. Part of me still kinda hopes it might not be totally useless. What do you think?

Emon Azzameen (36)
Cluster Mines (4)
Dengar (3)
Homing Missiles (5)
Extra Munitions (2)
Long-Range Scanners (0)
Slave I (0)

Sol Sixxa (28)
Predator (3)
Autoblaster Turret (2)
Cad Bane (2)
Extra Munitions (2)
Homing Missiles (5)
Cluster Mines (4)
Thermal Detonators (3)
Long-Range Scanners (0)

Total: 99

Either way, will try soon and report back.

Reporting back

Played a game on Vassal vs Fenn Rau, Kath Scarlet and a Jakku Gunrunner. A pretty interesting match-up. Fenn is a nice and juicy target for bombs, but spacetug array can mess with my positioning and Kath has the hitpoints to wither a few Bombs.

Round 2:

At this point, Sol has just performed a 3 bank to the left and snuggly placed a cluster mine between himself and Emon. Kath was taget-locked by both my fighters and was preumably going fast to avoid eating a homing. Only to instead get blocked and in turn block Fenn in a horrible position, r2 from fully modded Emon and in Sols autoblaster range. Kath proceeded to then eat all the cluster mines she could stomach (she takes 2 tokens this round). Round after this one, Sol performs a 1 forward and again drops a cluster to the right using his special ability (1 on Fenn, 2 on Kath). Emon 3 banks to the right, also dropping clusters (1 on Fenn, 2 on Kath).

Round after that, both Kath and Fenn are hit by a Thermal detonator, finally killing Fenn (the Autoblaster Turret was not on target this game, rolling only blanks and crits vs Fenn) and leaving Kath at 1 hull. Sol then Autoblasts that last hull away, and a few turns later Jakku Gunrunner eats a homing from Emon for the final blow.

In all honesty, my opponent had horrible red dice and was unfamiliar with the new stuff in my list. All things considered, still a surprisingly good first test.

Take-aways

Cad Bane is not nearly as useful as Sabine.

Sols 1 turn bomb drop was much more useful than i imagined. I would actually consider it equal to Emons ability.

Comments?

I'm planning on trying out something along these lines at our local group on Friday. I'm currently considering going with:

Scum Bombing (100)

Sol Sixxa (50) - Scurrg H-6 Bomber
Expert Handling (2), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Cad Bane (2), Proximity Mines (3), Conner Net (4), Experimental Interface (3)
Emon Azzameen (50) - Firespray-31
Proximity Mines (3), Dengar (3), Concussion Missiles (4), Glitterstim (2), Slave I (0), Guidance Chips (0), Extra Munitions (2)
A couple of questions for you:
- Did you manage to use all your ordnance? (I normally struggle to drop more than two bombs per ship in a game effectively)
- How often did you use autoblaster turret? (I feel like all those high PS ships like Fenn will constantly be out of range)
A couple of comments:
- I'm hoping that Expert Handling / Experimental Interface will let me get even more bomb action by barrel rolling and then dropping a bomb (losing a target lock in the process)
- I think Cad Bane will lift the expected damage of my proximity mines from 1.5 to 2.25 (and I like the fact that this will be for bombs from either of my ships)
Probably I should switch out Guidance Chips for Long Range Scanners. I love the automatic crit that guidance chips gives me on the firespray but realistically it's harder to use the missiles if I've got to get a lock and be range 2-3 against higher PS ships.

P.s. Thanks for your post. I've been playing for a while but signed up to this forum specifically so that I could reply to this since I'm trying something similar! :)

Last time I was playing with Nym I was thinking about Sol for being almost better just for her ability to do curved bombings.

VI would seem excellent for her, to get her PS bit higher.

To be honest, I sometimes think lower PS is easier for bombing as you know exactly where your target is going to be.

I tried my list (see above) out last night and went 0-3. I ran against a Dash / Nora list twice and also a Jess, Biggs, Captain Rex and Lowrick list.

Bottom line, my bombers were fun and I enjoyed using them, but they're expensive and Sol Sixxa in particular didn't last very long if she received focus fire. The rebel list I ran against was designed to farm out damage and be hard to hurt (Biggs, selflessness, reinforce etc.) and the bombs were a cool way of getting around that. I really struggled against Dash as he constantly had an HLC shot due to my lower pilot skill.

It was fun, but only as a novelty, I don't think it's competitive.
