Looking for opponent in new Play-By-Forum Mini Campaign.

By Sadgit, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I am currently playing the Heirs of Blood campaign in a Play-by-Forum (PBF) format over at BGG. As this will come to an end soon, I am looking to set up a new (mini) campaign.
Is anybody interested in joining me? A 1 vs. 1 or 1 vs. 2 would be best as with more people discussing each and every hero move the turnover is a little on the slow side :) .

Check out this thread to get an impression of Descent as a PBF . The only thing that you need is the game and are a couple of minutes every day. I can help you with everything else.

This sounds interesting, I own the campaigns other than trollfens. What are you looking to play and how long do these PBF games tend to take?

I am open to all suggestions. PBFs by nature are best compared to traditional correspondence chess games. So typically you get one turn a day or less. However, it is completely up to the players. I have access to Trollfens, MoR and LotW mini campaigns.

I might be interested. What hero count are you interested in? 2,3, or 4? Suspect 2 is faster but never did pbf before.

Also you prefer hero side or Overlord? Also what are the rules on using stuff from expansion that only one party has?

I'd do either MoR or LotW, I don't have Trollfens. Leaning towards MoR.

Great, many people are interested in this! I received messages from Zaltyre, Felin, Bucho and BenOverlord.

Given that most people have not played Descent in PBF mode, I suggest to play a test game together before committing to a campaign. This way I can help everyone to get accustomed with PBF-specific mechanics and tools and you can see if PBFs are an enjoyable format for you.

Let's do the first quest of Zaltyre's Weapons of War mini campaign. It is called Tidings of Gloom and available from here . As Zaltyre developed it, he should be our evil OL here :) . Weapons of War uses components of the core game and LoR. On top of that we will be using secret rooms, travel event, OL cards, Plot decks and items of all available expansions. Any2card's D2e Companion Card Viewer or Psymia's ad-free Descent Wiki can be used as reference, if you are missing a card in use.

As we are all experienced players, I suggest we make things a little more interesting by randomizing the available heroes. Let's draw three heroes for each archetype that players may choose from. One hero may be re-rolled. Classes may be chosen freely.

I set up a new PBF thread at BGG here . The rules and setup is what I have used in the past, however, we can easily tailor any details to our needs.
Just sign in at BGG if you are interested in participating!

would a pbf be possible without all the online apps? like geeek roller, md4 hash system, etc. I am very interestied but i am not sure that I can 1 have the apps, or 2 use my pieces of maps. assuming i cant would it still be possible?

The GeekRoller is part of the forum software at BGG. You need to use it if you want to play a PBF.
The interactive map is a browser application that has been developed by a dedicated PBF player and can be used by everyone with a browser. You could play without it, you just need someone to post images of map updates regularly. You could use Vassal for that.
You can get around a encrypted OL deck if you find someone willing to moderate the PBF. Without moderator it does not work in my opinion.

Everything else is optional and mostly cosmetics.

I just discovered the interactive map, and it's sweet.

where is it and why isn't it posted?

I never knew this was a thing!

im very interested in this, I will sign up on the BGG Forum, can anyone access your particular forum to 'watch' how it plays?

when you've finished your current games hopefully I'll have some time to sort out having a go!

Yes, all PBF threads are public. If you think it might be for you just tell us. Link

@Sadgit ...

I was reviewing all of the above on BGG, and noticed that in this thread ( Weapons of War ), some of the cards to be used did not show up underlined for use with my D2e Companion viewer. I thought I would point them out and note the reason why, so that if you choose to correct it, you can.

Act I Item Deck
You show "Jinns Lamp", it should be "Jinn's Lamp" - apostrophe missing
You show Thiefs Vest", it should be "Thief's Vest" - apostrophe missing

Travel Event Decks
None of these show, as I used a different nomenclature. If you want to make it work (not sure if it matters), then the following changes would need to be made:
Change your "Core Travel Event 1/10" to "BG Travel Event 1 Of 10" - and all others following that pattern
Change your "LotW Travel Event 1/3" to "LW Travel Event 1 Of 3" - and all others following that pattern
Change your "LoR Travel Event 1/8" to "LR Travel Event 1 Of 8" - and all others following that pattern
Change your "TF Travel Event 1/3" to "TF Travel Event 1 Of 3" - and all others following that pattern
Change your "MoB Travel Event 1/5" to "MB Travel Event 1 Of 5" - and all others following that pattern
Change your "CtR Travel Event 1/2" to "CR Travel Event 1 Of 2" - and all others following that pattern

Secret Passages
For some reason, the Brigand's Quarters and The Lorekeeper's Vault are not being underlined, and yet they are spelled correctly. I have verified that this exact text works on other sites, such as FFG (this one). Don't know what to say here.

In a later post, you list many of the heroes under Quest Setup. One of the hero's is not showing correctly, because it is spelled wrong.
Change your "Augur Grimsom" to "Augur Grisom"

Obviously, you don't need to change any of this if you don't want to. I just thought I would point out how they should show, if you want them to work with the D2e Companion Card viewer.

I hope you all have fun with this !!!

Thanks a lot for this. Greatly appreciated.

how do you move monsters here?

FYI, There's a handy button on the top of the comment box (5th from the left, looks like a chain) that let's you hide hyperlinks underneath comment text. It lets you avoid pasting absurdly long URL's like the one above. For example, here's the interactive map you linked.

Secondly, the icon on the right of Baron Z opens a menu that lets you add and position monsters. Each button on the right lets you add a different thing. All objects get positioned by their top left corners, using the grid on the outside for reference. (The master goblin archer is at D5.)

does the moderator place the monsters for initial set up?

So, I am one of those kinds of people that REALLY DON'T like it when things should work, and don't. I am specifically speaking about this:

On BGG, where the Weapons of War thread (and game) are on-going, the Brigand's Quarters and The Lorekeeper's Vault are not underlined like they should be (like they are on this site, and within this post). I worked on this for 5 hours in an attempt to figure out why. Couldn't figure out why. This really ANNOYS the hell out of me. :P

That's maddening. It's especially odd that the text works here and not there, which suggests it's about a difference in the websites.

EDIT:

I think it might be an unseen typo. I see them as underlined here (copied as plain text from your post above). I'm in the chrome browser, if that matters. Where specifically are you not seeing them underlined- page 1 of the WoW thread?

Edited by Zaltyre

Zaltyre ... Yes, page 1 of the WoW thread, under Secret Passages .

After some more testing, I now think I know what the problem is. I think it is the apostrophe. I think Sadgit is using some character other than the apostrophe, for the apostrophe.

Sadgit, if you look at the modification you made for Thief's Vest and Jinn's Lamp (these work), the character used for the apostrophe in Brigand's Quarters and The Lorekeeper's Vault is different !!!

I know I am not playing, but in researching my issues with the D2e Companion Viewer above, I also noticed the following:

Under Act I items (page 1 of WoW on BGG), you list the following:

48. Steel Broadsword
49. Sunburst
50. Teleportation Rune
51. Steel Broadsword
52. Sunburst
53. Teleportation Rune

Since there are only 1 of each of these cards, by listing them twice, your dice rolling for an item is not going to be correct. In addition, you have left out the following Act I items:

Phoenix Pendant
Poisoned Blowgun
Ring of Power

Perhaps you were doing a copy/paste of the duplicated items above, and forgot to edit them? Or just made a mistake? I thought I would point it out as you won't get an correct dice roll this way.

Edited by any2cards

can someone walk me through the bgg dice thing?

edit: where do you find it?
