That would be great and all, but you misunderstood what I said. When I said "or get clarified to mean what I think it really is", I was refering to a reverse in the current rule. It seems like this should have been obvious within the context of my post. I know how the rule currently stands and I dislike it for reasons stated in this thread.

You can't really blame him for misunderstanding you. Clarify means to make an idea or statement clear. It has been clarified. The will and intent of FFG in regards to this matter is perfectly clear. What you want is a reversal. That could happen, but it won't be any time soon. I figure not until a little before (as a result of any regionals, if there are regional tournaments) or shortly after Gencon is the most likely time, if it is reversed at all.

The rule behind it has changed. You must now assign enough damage to destroy the unit, this means all remaining hit points plus any active cancels on it before you can assign any damage to the capital.
are u sure?
FAQ says: "the attacking player must assign enough damage to destroy each defending unit before... Note that more damage can be assigned to a unit at the attacker's discretion, in anticipation of damage cancellation effects... "
Toughness is cancel effects (p. 16 rules)
p.s. sorry for russian english)))
Several posts above a link was posted where this is clarified. Regarding "assigning damage in anticipation of cancellation effects": While the attacker must consider all effects that cancel damage that are in play when damage is assigned, he may overassign damage if he expects that the defender will play damage cancellation effects in the action window at the end of the assign damage step.
