Villakarvarousku's repaints

By Villakarvarousku, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

I just finished my tiny (for the time being) rebel fleet, so I thought I'd share some pictures!

Thematically I really liked the idea of a ragtag fleet made up of dirty and damaged ships cobbled together from whatever they could get their hands on, but after a lot of pondering I decided that a unified colour scheme just looks better on the table. I then tried to come up with a nice subtle and toned down colour combination that would look good with some wear and battle damage, but after several attempts I couldn't find anything I liked, and I eventually I ended up with something... a bit different.

It's a bit on the flashy side compared to what I had planned, but to be honest I'm pretty happy with it.

The Nebulon was the first one I did, and I think it looks a bit out of line with the rest of them, but it's my least favourite ship of the lot (both to fly and to look at) so I don't mind that so much. I might redo it at some point.

I won't bore you with all of the squadrons, but here's a couple of my favourites:

I tried to copy the prototype B-wing colours from the Rebels episode and vary the markings a little bit.

A-wings! The stripes are a kind of orangeish brown, but it's not showing great in the pictures because I don't know how lighting works.

I love Scurrgs, but I need to learn how to take pictures. This looks pretty blue and red in the photo, but it's really more of a turqoise and orange.

And finally, a bonus Firespray! I'll save the rest of the imperials for now, but this is probably my favourite squadron that I've done. (Really I'm just pleased that I didn't entirely mess up the wet blending.)

That's it for now. I'm planning on painting my imperial ships too, but I'm struggling with the colour scheme. I've been thinking light grey with dark purple markings, but I don't know if it would work or not or what the markings should be like. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to look at these, and any kind of feedback would be greatly appreciated!

That is a nice tight looking fleet. It is interesting how often I don't particularly care for a particular color a painter uses but really like the overall look of what they've done. Love those stripes/markings on the A-wings. Nice work.

Love the scurggs. May have to touch up mine after seeing yours!

Nice! I LOVE the scheme on the capital ships, they remind me of gold skins in smite...

If I may: I wouldn't suggest it. While both paint jobs are good, Villakarvarousku's Scurggs match the general paint job of his squads, which is largely one color other that the original - a dominant color (either red or blue. Blue in this case) and a 'background' color (white) with a divider/highlighter (red in this case) whereas yours match your general paint job, which is largely white with one solid (non-sparkly (matte?)) color added for a subtle highlight. They're styles that are almost the opposite in effect: his is largely colorful (and somewhat glittery), but in such amounts that the white sticks out, and yours is largely white, causing the color to stick out. I think they'd clash if placed in the same fleet.

Thanks, I really appreciate that! I know it's a bit of an odd colour scheme, but it works for me.

Haha, thanks, but yours look really good! Especially as a pair. And @GhostofNobodyInParticular has a point in that they fit in very nicely with the rest of your squadrons (that I've seen anyway). I just realised how similar the three that I posted look, but the rest of my squadrons are kind of all over the place. I also just really dislike painting white, so I try to keep it to the smaller bits rather than as a base colour.

Thanks! I had to look those up, but I see what you mean. Glad you like it!

Thats a great scheme, nice work.

Love the A-Wings, particularly the scheme on the right.

Yeah those A wings are serious business, I applaud your sanity.

Cheers! I don't deserve much of the credit though, as I took quite a lot of inspiration from this awesome picture .

In fact I originally painted them sand brown with broad diagonal orange stripes and it was frankly pretty horrible, so I redid them just a few days ago. Much happier with these ones. :)

awfully good painting scheme, love how it is done.

As I've said elsewhere, continue to pour eye candy

Thank you very much, and good point. More than the color scheme, I like Villa's subtle highlighting of the colors, especially on the guns. I got a little bit lazy and skipped that step.

Amazing work!! Like it was mentioned before, those A-Wings are the bomb! even the details on the B-Wings are incredible. Well done!

Princess Leia has just smuggled us some brand new Hammerhead Corvettes!

While everyone else is busy testing out the new toys, I don't have anyone to play with at the moment, so I figured I'd get them ready for battle in the meantime.

I gotta say, it's not my finest highlighting work as my brush situation has slightly deteriorated and I've got no place to buy a new one right now, and I may have rushed them a little bit too, but they look alright at playing distance. I also struggled a bit to find pleasing patterns with the panel layout, especially when trying to keep the pair looking similar but distinct. I'm thinking these guys might look better with a pattern that doesn't follow the panel lines, but I felt this look would match the rest of my ships better. (I've got some tough decisions ahead of me when I buy the MC80s...)

Anyway, feedback welcome as always. Really looking forward to seeing what other people do with them!

I don't know what your talking about, your highlighting is beautiful! Those look great. My only problem with them is that I can't stand the Seahawks.

Thanks! And fair point, haha. If it helps, I haven't got the faintest idea about American football (had to look it up just now), I just picked some of my favourite colours.

Hahaha. It does help. I can enjoy them much more now!

good corvettes, well within your painting scheme. If only I could highlight as you do!

Thanks! I finally got to fly them today too, and they did indeed fit in pretty nicely. Fun little ships!

I'm aware. I'll get them back up as soon as I get back to my computer (hopefully tomorrow) 'cause it's a pain doing that on mobile.

Fixed!

Yes much better, and they do look nice!

And so it begins! I finally made up my mind about how I want to paint my Imperials. First up, the Arquitens:

xpop3a.jpg

34xlyfd.jpg

I'll be doing them all with the same theme, so I thought it'd be a good idea to put this one up for comments while it's still early. For the Imperial symbol, I only used a simple paper circle with a hole in it to get the outer ring and the centre point right, and then freehanded the rest of it, but I'm pretty sure I'll try to use a full stencil for the bigger ships.

I'm also hoping the symbol will look a bit clearer when it's larger, because it's kind of indistinct in this one. I think that's to do with the depth differences in the panels, and the dimensions being slightly wonky since I freehanded it, but also the highlights. I feel that the placement of highlights has always been a weak spot of mine, and the different colours going across panel lines only made that worse. I was never sure whether to highlight strictly panel by panel or along the edges of the symbol/stripes as well, and the result is a bit of a mess. Overall I'm quite happy with how it turned out, but that's something to keep in mind for the next ones.

Also, if anyone has any good tips for window lighting, I'd be happy to listen. It... didn't go quite as planned.

Oh! I was also able to split a Hammerhead pack with someone to get a third one. I realise it's kind of just more of the same, but here it is anyway with it's little buddies:
