Legal Templates

Thinking of diving into plastic maneuver templates. What companies are considered legal if I take them to a tournament?

Any of them, as long as they have essentially the same dimensions as the cardboard ones.

Uhm? All of them as long as they are identical to the wibbly wobbly FFG templates.

My recommendations would be micro art studios and Cog o'Two

Curled Paw on Etsy or Litko are good.

Thanks. It sounds like a silly question but I have played enough games with rules on only using official tools in tournament settings.

I've seen the Litko on Amazon and wanted to be sure buying a set isn't going to cause headaches if/when I attend an event.

The tournament rules have specifics about what components can be substituted with third party versions. Templates and most tokens are OK.

Yeah, you're right to ask. For example, it's not permitted to use 3rd party acrylic obstacles instead of the cardboard asteroids, even if they have identical form and dimensions.

I remembered seeing that part. Some companies require only using their stuff (playmats for instance) or have to be licensed by the company.

It's all so confusing.

So what one is everyone's favorite?

While true, i do use them.

I just ok it with my opponent before each match, and i have the official ones on hand to compare/use in case my opponent doesn't want me to use them.

I think the FFG ones are legal. They might be off a bit. Kinda like the 2017 range ruler.... and the bomb token.

I got mine from Art of War Studios in England. They took about 4 weeks or so to get to me in California, but they are customized (you get to choose the logo & the color of the template). At the time I ordered, they were closed for the Christmas holidays, so I'm sure they had a back log of orders that they were getting through. And believe it or not, they were/are cheaper than what I could find in the States. They currently have an "Ultimate Token & Template" pack that runs about $32 US. For the movement templates alone would be about $40 from other places here in the US.

They do come unpainted, but it's super easy to do it yourself. Lay the paint down before you peel the protective paper. That's it!

And ironically the FFG playmats are terrible due to how slick they are. They couldn't make it easier to move a ship on accident if they tried. At home I use a 3rd party mat where you can accidentally shift the whole table and nothing in play moves, but not legal for some reason.

Applied Perspective is the only I use for a lot of acrylic stuff.
