Hello,
This is my first post on this forum, so if this has been addressed already my apologies for the redundancy. After a fun game of Imperial Assault last night our group had a divisive topic come into question regarding movement. Not being able to rectify the situation by reading the rules and faq, we decided that the most fair way to figure out how to proceed was to look online to see if any official clarification had been given. (Wouldn't want to give an unfair advantage to either side). I volunteered that I'd do the digging for the group, and have been doing searches all over online for the debate about how movement points work (Specifically how they pool, and can be spent) - and have not yet found an
official answer
anywhere (mostly good debate and wording interpretation). Our specific conundrum is that the Imperial Player decided on a tactic to clog a hallway (2 wide) with all available units (Nexu, and storm troopers x6). I was playing Jynn and said "No problem, I can just use both my actions for move (5 movement points) to pool a total movement of 10 points, plus 2 strain for another 2 points (12 total points), and make the mad sprint through everyone."
This was VETO'd with the argument that character movement didn't work that way. Each Move set and Strain move was to be treated as individual segments that had to be resolved before taking another action to spend movement. Most every forum I've read online has come to the general consensus that this is wrong, and you can indeed pool movement points and can spend them in 1 giant slug. However it was pointed out that none of these sources were "Official". Our group is fine going forward either way, I am just reaching out for someone with authority to bring the hammer down and lay the debate to rest. So any moderators out there if you're reading this, we would greatly greatly appreciate a final ruling. Or if someone has an official references that addresses this specifically without ambiguity, you would be my hero. Thanks so much!
Seeking Help - Movement Pooling; Final Answer
Not a moderator, but I do know the rules, and they are pretty clear. Taking a move action, or suffering a strain to gain a movement point, does not move the figure . It only adds movement points to your pool. These movement points can then be spent all at once, or at different times, or never, as you choose. See "Movement" in the rules reference guide.
To clarify with an example: you can take a move action to gain 5 movement points. Those points are added to your pool. They are not removed from your pool unless you spend them or end your activation. You can spend any or none of them before performing another action. So you could save them all, and then perform another move action. You then have 10 movement points in your pool. Then you can suffer 1 strain for 1 movement point. You now have 11 MP in your pool. If you do this again you will have 12 MP in your pool. Then you can spend them all to move, or spend only some of them, or spend none of them. They are available in your pool to use whenever you want (except while performing an action) until you spend them or end your activation.
Edited by StompburgerYou don't need a ruling, you just need to read the movement chapter from the rulebook, which is also available here: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-imperial-assault/.
It is pretty clearly indicated that gaining movement points do not move the figure, spending movement points moves the figure. When you perform the Move action, it allows to perform a move, which gives you movement points according to Speed. The Move action finishes immediately and does not move the figure. You can only spend movement points during your activation before or after actions, not during them (unless in special cases when movement points are gained directly from a special action).
Rules Reference Guide, Movement said:When a figure performs a move, it gains movement points equal to its Speed.
* Performing a move does not move the figure ; it only provides
movement points that may be spent during that figure's
activation. This means that a figure may use its first action to
perform a move, followed by an attack, and then spend the
movement points. It may even spend some movement points
before the attack and then some of them after the attack.
Emphasis from the RRG.
RRG, Actions said:* Movement points can be spent before or after performing
an action. If movement points are gained as part of a special
action, they must be spent immediately during that action.RRG, Abilities said:* An ability that can be used "during your activation" can be
used before or after performing an action during an activation.
It cannot be used while resolving an action.RRG, Strain said:* A hero can suffer 1 strain (strain) at any point during his activation
to gain one movement point. He may do this up to twice per
activation.
(Edit: Oops, forgot some tags.)
Yes, a hero can perform two Move actions to perform move twice, and also suffer up to 2 strain to gain additional 2 movement points (unless that would exceed Endurance), and then spend all of them or some of them at once.

Thank you. I had the strong notion this was correct. The debate was muddled with upset feelings in the moment (because you know; both sides entire strategies evolved on the different understanding of this rule) so both sides had pretty vested interest in reading the rules to their own favor. At any rate I forwarded this to my other 4 members and they've all accepted it going forward into our remaining 5 missions. Thanks again, your responses and references were very helpful and very much appreciated.
For LOL's I thought I'd share our super-nerdom by showing you how we play just a 'little' bit different.
Turns out years and years of old Lego's makes for really fun experiences in both building and playing together with friends.
Wow. That's amazing. The first one is Dark Obsession (Vader's mission), and the second is Brace for Impact (Rebel Troopers), right?
How many maps have you recreated like this? I'd love to see more of them!
You are right on the money Stompburger! Sharp eyes!
The hardest part was making sure that we could make everything to scale. Building AT-ST and Nexu to be on scale with the tiles took a bit of work - but paid off wonderfully when displayed in their full glory (and terror when deployed).
I'll post more maps as we build and progress through our campaign. (We average about 1 mission a month). These 2 maps are only I thought to take pictures of - but I'll be sure to diligently take more and share them in the future.
You need to show off some sweet heroes.
Seems very hospitable...
The above pictures were from our game last night. Sadly we lost pretty dang quickly. Everything started super great, being able to 1-shot the droids immediately and sprinting towards the door by the end of round 2. However as soon as we opened the door, trandoshans, some terrible dice rolls, and a nexu spawn sealed the fate of the game pretty quick. 2 wounded by the end of round 3, with bleed and stun by nexu and red guard respectively. Still trying our best we persevered a few more turns trying desperately to keep Mak and Geidon from being wounded. But a deployment of storm troopers tricked out in extra armor and damage dealing capacity quickly dealt far more damage than we could handle. In a desperate attempt we sprinted for the cell door, but as soon as we opened it, the red guards immediately ran in and with 2 bouts of super sucky dice rolls killed the prisoner before he could even leave his cell. Was a pretty devastating game.
Don't know how other games have gone for people, but this felt like a big pendulum swing. Hopefully we do better next game.
At any rate more pictures to follow - I can only post 2 at a time due to the limitations of this forum.
Nice map and heroes! These are so cool.
If you want to post more pictures at a time, you can use an image hosting site. Links to images will be automatically embedded in the post as images. I don't know what other options there are, but I use imgur.com

This is correct. You were right. Whomever argued another interpretation was wrong. (So long as you spent 2 movement points for each hostile figure you entered you're good.)
That looks amazing! I hope you get some cool gear upgrades during the campaign.
The one thing I would be concerned about is removing the checkerboard tiles form the big pile underneath. Just thinking about it makes my nails and fingertips itch.
You should start a new topic in the Painting and Modification section with your Lego boards and heroes. Only people looking for rules answers will see them here

That sounds like a fantastic idea. I'll try and figure out an image hosting thing and move these pics into a new thread. It'll be a few days, but I'll update on here when I do with the link. Thanks for the idea!
Okay - Got all our friends pictures gathered and uploaded onto Imgur.
Link for the new thread with all the Lego goodness can be found here:
