New to LCG -Requires multiple Cores to Play?

By Virtigo, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I am very interested in the LCG format after feeling that Star Wars Destiny takes way too much money to play competitively.

Was wondering if multiple starter boxes was necessary to create viable tourney decks, and if my wife and I were to BOTH get into the game, would we need to buy even more copies?

Another question: How much would one expect to pay to stay competitive over a year buying released content with an LCG?

I Love the community emphasis on lore, and house loyalty. Perhaps as a newcomer, Unicorn might suit me as I feel like an outsider coming in :D

You will need mutliple cores. 3 will give you a complete set. You may be able to play with 2 cores. As for how much it would cost to stay competative for the year, you will need to buy 1 dynasty pack a month for $10-15. Then 1 deluxe box every 3-6 months for around $20

Bare minimum for a complete set is three starters. If both you and your wife wish to be competitive you may need to buy more, it depends on which clans you play, and how many of the neutrals we see in the box.

Someone else can correct me on my math, but assuming 2 cycles a year, each a cycle of 6, then $180. This isn't including price of starter or any deluxe boxes they put out. Starter is $40, I believe, but you should ne able to find it cheaper, so you may pay 100-120 for at least three.

First year you'll spend $300, if my math is right. I don't know if/when we're getting deluxe boxes, so I don't know how that enters into it.

Side note: The Unicorn Welcomes you.

1) Probably, and probably.

2) 2x [Core Set x3 + Dynasty Pack x12 + Deluxe Expansion x2]? Assuming full retail prices approximately $700 for two people for a year.

If you are looking to connect with the community at large, we have a very active Discord channel that is a great place to ask questions, and to keep abreast of rules and spoilers. Welcome to the game, I hope you and your wife enjoy it!

Good grief! That's a load of cash. Maybe if I get my SW Destiny collection sold off I might, MIGHT consider that.

Remember these are full retail prices, so if you can work out something with your FLGS or get it from one of the scummy online retailers that undercut every other retailer, then your cost will be less. And that number is for both you and your wife.

Because of the way clan alignments work, you can probably just work off of one set for the two of you as long as you both aren't playing the same clan (Unicorn) and influencing the same cards into your decks.

I don't know if it matters, but for me it's a little bit easier to swallow considering that it's spread out over the course of a year, and not in bigger chunks as it was with CCGs.

That is helpful. Hopefully I can get away with purchasing enough for one person and just have my wife and I play two different clans.

That's what I plan to do since my wife plays much more casually than I do. I also plan to pick up cores from people getting out of the game when that happens to bolster my collection.

My wife and I have played other LCGs by FFG, and have gotten away with just this. Three cores, plus the monthly packs and deluxe packs. We usually get by just fine having two decks - but I should stress that neither of us is truly tournament competitive - we play locally and have fun with it, and do just fine. We've had the odd argument where we both want three of the same neutral card. She usually wins those ;) But it doesn't come up that often, and less so as the game gets more cards.

I don't know the secondary market on LCGs, but that is something else you may want to look into for padding out certain cards that the two of you may be interested in having 3 for each of you.

It's highly unlikely to be that many releases in a year. It's normal for a month break between releases of cycles and deluxes etc.

That's part of the game balance - your wife gets her choice from the collection first, in exchange you have a reliable person to play with even if the game store is closed or far away ^_~

In Warhammer Conquest some people would pick their team, and maybe 2 they want as allies, and then swap the remaining cards with players who weren't interested in those teams. I imagine people who are clan-loyal could work out to swap the clan cards in a similar manner.

There isn't one. For AGOT 2.0, I tried buying 3 core and selling out playsets of each faction but they would never sell. After you factor in shipping and ebay fees and paypal fees, you need to sell each playset for 14 dollars a piece just to break even. At that point people start to say why don't I just buy the core set and get a bunch of other stuff for a few bucks more.

A cute thing FFG does with all of their Core Sets, though, is slip in a few neutral staples that everyone should generally be running, with three boxes netting one a single playset.

Neutrals usually come in multiples actually. Usually 2 sometimes 3. Three core sets should get you enough neutrals for two or more full playsets.

Except the 8 neutrals that everyone wanted in AGOTs, Tears of Lhs and Put to the sword were two big ones if I remember correctly

AGOT 1.0 ?

2.0. Both are staple targeted kill events.

Speaking of which... we just got the 2016 Championship decks which included the complete winning deck including, of course, multiple copies of those staple cards. I look forward to see the complete full bleed L5R winning deck, starting next year! Which will also be useful to get extra copies of staples.

Follow up: Would it be possible to Pass on Dynasty packs that do not apply to your clan/clans? Is it common from past LCGs that there are necessary cards in each pack?

Dynasty packs, no. They contain a mix of all clans and will usually have something that you will want in every pack. Deluxe expansions, possibly; they will almost certainly be by clan, so if you're not interested in playing that clan, you can probably skip it. The deluxe boxes will contain cards for all other clans, but very few.

People are also posting with the idea that FFG will also put out 12 monthly packs and 2 deluxe expansions a year. That is highly unlikely since they haven't pulled that off for any of their other LCGs.

What Dark Templar said. Realistically, if the dynasty cycle started in January, you would seenthat whole 6-pack cycle, then like a month or two lag for a deluxe box, then another month or two lag before the next cycle kicks in. So probably a Deluxe and about 7-8 packs? Maybe?
