Epic ship critical damage question

By TrooperTK422, in X-Wing Rules Questions

With the C-ROC finally out, we decided to play some Epic for the first time in a while at my local store. During the course of the game, my C-ROC picked up the Deck Breach crit which reads:

"Place 1 of the Upgrade cards equipped to this section under this card. You cannot use that Upgrade card while this card is faceup. Energy: Spend 2 energy to flip this card facedown."

I had the title Merchant One equipped, so my first choice was to slip the title under the crit, presuming that it would work like Integrated Astromech and R2-D6, in that "losing" the title would not affect the upgrades I'd taken in the slots the title provided. My opponents didn't see it that way, and to keep things moving I just chose another upgrade to get hit by the crit. After the game I looked around online and didn't see any kind of official ruling on this, but with the IA+R2-D6 thing as precedent it would seem like you could just assign the title to the crit and not really lose anything, is that right? I seem to remember there being an argument about this same crit back when the CR-90 came out, but I don't think it ever got an official ruling.

I think you're right based on the rulings we currently have, but the competing precedent is that when a section of a Huge ship becomes crippled you have to discard upgrades if you no longer have enough slots for your equipped cards. That was the crux of a lot of the arguments about IA before that was FAQd.

So it's just possible that they intend Huge ships to care about slots during play and not just during squad building, and that they'd errata this damage card to work with that.

But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a lot of Epic play rulings to make it into the FAQ.

Based on other rulings in the FAQ you are correct.

However your opponent may argue that you can't choose the title. The title is not equipped to either section, it is equipped to the ship as a whole so the damage card in question cannot actually target it. Most squad builders assign the title to a particular section but this is not a rules thing, rather just a software issue. Aaaaaand this issue takes us down the dark pathway to where sometimes huge ships are treated as one ship and sometimes each section is treated like a ship...at, what appears, to be the convenience of FFG.

Agreed. However, disabling the title in this case (Merchant One) would have an effect, you would lose the +1 maximum energy granted by it.

While it's possible , the crippling mechanic is specific to huge ships with two ship cards that are at least half dead, so I think it's unlikely. But if you had such a crit on the Tantive IV title when the CR90's fore is crippled, it wouldn't be able to keep the extra crew and team that it otherwise could.

On the contrary, the CR90 titles can only be equipped to the fore, while the Raider titles can only be equipped to the aft. On the C-ROC, Gozanti, and GR-75, there's only one ship card so there's no need to specify. Modifications however...

Agreed :( I know better but still get my hopes up every time a huge ship is released.
