Vessery, Brath and support

By Warlon, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Alright so here's what I got:

TIE Defender: · Colonel Vessery (35)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Tractor Beam (1)
TIE/D (0)
TIE Defender: · Rexler Brath (37)
Predator (3)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x7 (-2)
TIE Bomber: Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE Shuttle (0)
Fleet Officer (3)
· Rebel Captive (3)
-- TOTAL ------- 99p. --

Need some thoughts on this store tournament list, I know Rexlar isn't exactly ideal, but his PS and ability has saved my rear countless times, and my local meta seems to favor the PS 6-8 crowd of aces.

I've run it on that A.I website thing and I've discovered that the computer REALLY hates support ships, even if it isn't key to my list.

I could probably drop Rebel Captive to get Omega Leader, but I'm so burned out on 2 attack ships that I want to stick with at least 3.

The idea is to get Vessery to shoot first with Tractor Beam and either cause the target to spend all tokens to avoid the shot or get tractored, and Brath follow up with a fully modified shot due to a TL spot for Vessery and a Focus from FO. I've tried Expertise on Brath but without a way to reroll the blanks it becomes difficult to get damage through, and if he has to spend a TL to reroll that's an action he could be using to double focus instead of spotting for Vessery.

I've played with similar lists for a bit. The extra focus to Rexler is nice, but the bomber just needs more juice.

The most successful lists I've had are the following two:

Tomaxattani

TIE Bomber: · Tomax Bren (24)
Cool Hand (1)
Lightweight Frame (2)
TIE Shuttle (0)
Systems officer (2)
Fleet Officer (3)
TIE Defender: · Rexler Brath (37)
· Swarm Leader (3)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x7 (-2)
TIE Fighter: · "Night Beast" (15)
TIE Fighter: · "Chaser" (14)
-- TOTAL ------- 100/100p. --

Plenty o' tokens to shove around.

TIE Bomber: · Captain Jonus (22)
Determination (1)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE Shuttle (0)
Fleet Officer (3)
· Mara Jade (3)
TIE Defender: Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Ion Cannon (3)
TIE/D (0)
TIE Defender: Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Ion Cannon (3)
TIE/D (0)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

Accurate ions and stress can walk anyone off the board.

Try this:

Vessery, VI, Tractor Beam, TIE D = 37

Rexler Brath, Expertise, Mk2 Engines, x7 = 40

Pure Sabacc, VI = 23

Rex target locks to enable Vessery, which works perfectly with Expertise. He can just leave the TL in play for a few turns, and will often want to. People may go for Rex to disable Vessery, but he is your toughest ship and if he is targeted, Vessery and Sabacc will tear them to shreds.

Defenders and Strikers look ridiculously good together on the table, as well.

Friend and I managed to get some games in earlier, and I ran something similar except Vessery had X7, Brath had Predator and Sabaac had LWF.

The more I fly the bomber shuttle the more I realize it just doesn't work as a pure support ship, with all the red dice around 6 health just melts too fast unless it has Focus + Evade.

Sabaac is still my favorite Striker pilot, he's basically an Imperial Biggs. And the Striker is my favorite ship ever.

Just wish there wasn't many ways to kill something in one round...I'm looking at you, Rey, Dengar and Fenn Rau!

Yeah, high offense like that doesn't do Imperials any favors. All I can say is you've got to practice a lot and work the rocks to control how you can be attacked. It's doable, though.

I tried Triple D at the European Championships. The original plan was:

Colonel Vessery - TIE/x7, Veteran Instincts
Delta Squadron Pilot - TIE/D, Ion Cannon
Delta Squadron Pilot - TIE/D, Ion Cannon

...the idea being that the Ion Cannons would help shut down low agility ships like Engine Upgrade Ghosts, Norra, TLT Y-Wings and Miranda (curse her eyes), while Vessery could be the closer and potentially get double mods on attack. Unfortunately, while I was in the queue to register, I realised that Vessery and the Deltas shared a base tile, so ended up taking Maarek Stele instead.

Despite some excrutiatingly close games (the closest being a 1 health, ioned and stressed Quickdraw somehow surviving against an-out-of-arc, range 1 health Delta to kill it next turn), I finished with a 2 win, 6 loss record. My only wins? Against x7 Defenders.

Alright, I've completely changed the list to this:

TIE Phantom: · "Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire Control System (2)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
TIE Striker: · "Pure Sabacc" (22)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Adaptive ailerons (0)
TIE/sf Fighter: · "Quickdraw" (29)
· A score to settle (0)
Fire Control System (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)
Targeting Synchronizer (3)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

I have learned through experimentation that Sabaac + Targeting Synchronizer is a BEAST. Seriously, he's practically Fenn Rau but better because he's imperial! (Can you feeeeeeel the bias?)

Whisper, despite being more fragile due to auto damage, still wrecks anything that has less than 3 evade dice. Even if they have the dice, she's probably rolling 4-5 hits depending on range, so at least 1 hit is getting through. And in the event I am out Pilot Skilled, I can have her take pot shots at range 3 and turtle up with evade + focus (usually)

Quickdraw is easily becoming my favorite pilot (next to sexy wexy Sabaac) her ability forces some mind games one whether or not you want to shoot her and being native PS 9, she's gonna cause problems. I've discovered just letting her ability happen naturally and not trying to force it is better.
