I've failed to read Aftermath as I just can't get into the style of writing. Read the Vader series of comics and some of the mini series. Overall I'm not terribly impressed but then I wasn't with most of the EU anyways. It's still Star Wars and fun but I've not read anything that's blown me away.

Read Tarkin and Lost Stars.

So far I've read Ashoka, Tarkin, A New Dawn, Lost Stars and Aftermath.

I've enjoyed them all especially Ashoka, Lost Stars and A New Dawn.

It's nice to have stories for characters other than the ones on the films

I have been keeping up with the novels, except Lost Stars and Catalyst. I enjoy the stories about my favorite characters, and I enjoy seeing how some of the minor characters (Pryce) ended up where they did. I have been contemplating a Marvel Unlimited subscription seeing as the price of the annual is paid for after about a dozen books.

You know how many people will often say that a film based on a book is never as good as the book... it is that kind of thing but worse. These new books tell a huge story now, while the films are much less involved by comparison.

I gotcha! I feel the same way with media all the time, the more details and story the better. I will say thought that I am not a fan of mixing media. So while I love the screen star wars library(movies/tv shows) I would not like them nearly as much if the accompanying books held details or plot points needed to enjoy the movies. I often look up the plot to certain SW comics and books, and find that they look interesting. But honestly, star wars is an audio-visual genre for me. SO much of its strength comes from the sound design and the special effects/cinematography.

So yea, if these books/comics are crucial to understanding the movies or tv show I would agree with you, but I don't think they are. You get more background sure, but the movies are still self-contained and the tv shows build on the movies without relying on print material(unless they get canceled..)

Didn't most of the old expanded universe deal with new material or take place after RotJ? The new stuff is definitely supplementary to the original trilogy and new trilogy. It has that base that allows it to be instantly more important to you!

I wouldn't say no to a high quality Star Wars TV show, like Game of Thrones level production values. Not like Disney is strapped for cash, they could do it and it would pay for itself.

I am not a hater of the new cannon, but I love it more for the new toys is spawns than the actual stories on film. However it sure has become noticeable that these novels and comics seam to be doing a better job of presenting STAR WARS than the Star Wars films...

How do you feel about this gang? Where are these badass films?

I don't think a 2 hour film will ever give a good showing of all their side characters - TV shows & books have much more room for character development beyond the main beginning-failure/mentor-redemption arc that often appears in stories.

I think Phasma could've been wayyy cooler in TFA, but the fact that we're getting these stories means they actually care about whats happening and the story of the universe. They're coming out before TLJ anyway so they'll hopefully tie in somewhat.

I agree with everything you posted... but now with the new cannon you do feel that you are missing some details in the films that are completely covered in the books.

It is what it is...

Both absolutely worth it, next time you are looking for something to read you know where to turn :P

Since we are all talking about which books are best of the new canon...

I have a copy of Tarkin, just not got round to it yet. I hear many good things about Lost Stars too. They'll be next on my list :)

Half way through Lost Stars and this is a chic book. Be warned men. It's a love story from a galaxy far far away. Am enjoying it so far but seems to predictable cannon wise. I keep having that feeling of how lucky or how convenient. Idk. So far Thrawn has been the best. I maybe the minority but I love the Aftermath Books.
