List-building: Heavy Hunters

By Leveton, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

In light of the prevalence of Jabba the Hutt (and his Nefarious Gains), I decided over the weekend that I wanted to create a list that runs a small number of high-power figures. Unfortunately, my quest to build a reasonably competitive list with minimal figures brought me right back to a Hunter list.

The list as it currently sits includes:

  • IG-88, Assassin Droid with Focused on the Kill -- He is a mobile, flexible hard-hitting attacker, offering strong long-range attacks until it becomes comfortable to move in and start shooting with red dice. Additionally, Focused on the Kill means he isn't dependent on support figures for focus and frees Jabba up to focus Bossk, Onar, and Shyla.
  • Bossk, Born Hunter -- Bossk makes the list almost purely for his single-target damage. He has the potential to one-shot medium-cost figures, even without command cards or focus, and he takes big chunks out of higher-cost figures. Indiscriminate Fire gives an opportunity for some nice AOE, as well.
  • Shyla Varad -- Shyla is probably the figure in the list with the least weakness. Good toughness, good damage, strong surge abilities, and the ability to set up the rest of the team with Mandalorian Whip.
  • Jabba the Hutt, Vile Gangster -- In a list with nobody to camp terminals, Jabba's card draw is critical, and a single focus per round is probably enough for this list. Where he really shines, though, is when he can give anyone else in the list an extra attack with Order Hit.
  • Onar Koma -- Onar is just a really good 6-point figure: damage, repositioning, etc.

This list probably isn't competitive at an elite level, but I think it is playable. I'm certain it will require very careful play to avoid losing someone too early, because it needs to close the activation gap early, pick off enemies. I haven't played it yet, but Masterchiefspiff tried it out. He favors cutting Bossk for something like a group of elite Weequays and Black Market, he told me afterward. I would probably favor Vinto, a regular Jawa, and Black Market if I was worried about card draw, but the point stands.

I have had a similar thought. I have put together a list of IG-88 w/focused on the Kill, Onar, Bantha w/beast tamer, Jabba, Temp All., Gideon, & Alliance Smuggler.

Fun to play but lacks the functional support of objectives and opening doors. Being able to Order a Hit with Jabba with IG was pretty awesome (however Greedo has made a habit of dodging said attacks). I also found that IG is a bantha poacher. Killing with no regard. I think your list will stand much better than mine does since you don't have a character that requires getting right in to middle of the enemy. The Bantha doled out some damage, but at the end of the day it never lasted past round 1.

I've never been a big fan of Bossk, but I will probably be looking at subbing in Shyla for the bantha and see where that takes me!

If you can play that list properly, I think you can make a lot of people pretty annoyed haha.

there is almost always some benefit to having meaningless activations in the game. There is always some objective or terminal control that you'll want. I'd think if you could fit a jawa or something similar (which is why the hired guns were used so much) you'd have something to sit on a terminal while the big guys went and crushed stuff.

I finally got to run versions of my Heavy Hunters this weekend. I played a couple of practice games last night and decided to drop Bossk in favor of Vinto and an elite Jawa. That gave me a couple of figures that could clean up stuff that isn't worth using a three-dice attack on, and I was pretty happy with how Vinto fit in.

I went 2-1 today at the Village Geek's store championship in McPherson, Kan., including 1-1 against lists with Jabba. I feel like the loss came down more to mistakes I made during the game than to problems with the list itself. Here are some takeaways after 5 games playing versions of this list:

  • With Focused on the Kill, IG-88 is a massive threat (which he should be for 12 points). There are a lot of popular figures he can ace, especially at close range, and the combination of Assault and free movement is amazing. Focused on the Kill took him from virtually unplayable to a solid centerpiece for a list.
  • Patience is key. IG-88, Shyla and Onar can all take a hit, but their toughness goes a lot farther when they don't take hits in the first round.
  • The elite Jawa can really surprise a target with how hard he can hit, especially when he's focused or has the right Tools for the Job. With both, the little maniac took out Hera from full health.
  • I'm still not sure whether I should keep Shyla in or swap in Bossk, but I got a beautiful Bladestorm with her in my first game of the tournament. The surge gave her enough to finish off her main target AND Cleave 2 onto an injured elite Jawa, with the AOE of Bladestorm finishing the Jawa.
  • Jabba is just the right amount of support for this list. Rebel Care Package would have been fine, too, but more than 6 points of support would have been overkill.
  • I might reduce the elite Jawa to a regular one so I can fit in Devious Scheme. Every match, I started with initiative the first round, when I really want it to start the second round and have a chance to Take Initiative on round three.

The regular Jawa Scavenger doesn't have surge for Pierce 2 though.

Yeah, I know. I really do like the elite Jawa a lot better than the regular version, between the surge for Pierce 2 and the 2 extra health (meaning you can survive an attack even when your opponent doesn't completely whiff). But starting the game with initiative hurts.
