New X-Wing 101 Article: I am their Father

EDIT: huh.

Those would not be my choices of expansion packs if I was teaching my kids how to play. I mean, teaching a young kid how to play X-Wing and NOT including the Millenium Falcon (or perhaps the Ghost, if the kid is a fan of Rebels) just seems wrong.

and which upgrades are assigned to the ships... well, let's just say that they are less than competitive.

But I like that they are at least promoting the idea that X-Wing can be played with kids.

EDIT 2: I will say that I'm proud of his one kid that (if I'm seeing the picture right) won a 2016 Store Championship. Good on him!

Sorry to pick holes in it but they've used the new Poe, which isn't in the core set?

Oh wow, yes they did. Not just the card, but the black and orange model too. Tsk tsk tsk.

Wouldn't be an FFG article without a colossal mistake :P

Missed opportunity to have Nathan Eide and his father write an article together.

Well, it is also about the $101 price point. Sometimes the upgrades in the box are more important than the model.

Yep.

Also vaguely amused that the article for kids is one of the few that contains a swear word.

Yeah, and as I think about it, he was probably encouraged by FFG to pick ships that aren't currently out of print. Otherwise the clear choices seem to be the original core set, Falcon expansion pack, and two small Imperial fighters.

But no use advertising those packs if the original core set and falcon pack are out of stock (they are, aren't they? I have to check)

Jake and Poe both get shoutouts, and yet no mention of the fact that Keyan is the one Y-Wing that survives the Battle of Yavin? Poor Keyan. He never gets any credit.

Those kids are rocking great t-shirts!

For those advocating getting the Falcon to teach the game to kids, I really wouldn't. Using basic X-wings and Tie Fighters to learn how to manoeuvre is far better than allowing them a turret. Add the Falcon after they know the rest.

The core set and Ghost is actually a pretty good starting point. Heck, not only can you run a budget Kanan/Biggs, but the Ghost itself is such a flexible ship (and comes with a lot of upgrades) that it really allows quite a bit of customization for flying style. The downside is that you're required to put the VCX-100 in your list in order to get to 100 points. Though with just 4 extra dollars you could pick up another small expansion pack and eliminate that requirement.

This is great. How old are the kids by the way?

My son turned 7 this past march. We've been busting out the ships for at least a year mostly to play with. My teaching him revolves a bit more around the difference between models and toys, being a miniature painter hobby person myself. Let me be clear...from the instant he saw them, he knew the 'models' were cooler. :)

We sort of play a dumbed down version of the rules. But often we more make up stories of what happens. I'm asking age because I've been considering easing him into the real rules.

Brilliant, though. I love this article.

The Falcon is there for two reasons.

1: The Falcon is just cool to see on the table.

2: Being a PWT it's more forgiving. This lets the kid throw dice keeping him/her interested while they learn the other concepts.

This was the age and method I taught my son. The first game we played was just moving and shooting. Then I would introduce one new concept for each time we played. I think it was only 3 or 4 games before we were playing by the full rules.

Now one year later and he's reminding me of rules that I forget.

How is running a VCX a downside?

Not anymore: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Evaan_Verlaine

Likewise, I'm playing mostly with two of my kids. No time for tournaments. Turns out that they are more interested in coop play than in competitive 100/6 - it would be great if FFG could actively support coop mission play in some future expansion. (That wouldn't have to interfere with the existing HotAC missions and expansions, which have become more than half of the game for us.)

Also, the kids are most familiar with the latest movie(s), so Rey's falcon is more appealing to them than Han's. As the error in the article shows, the HotR expansion was implied.

Although it is an actual Star Wars quote... the movies really aren't meant for kids. I think that this game has about the same target audience as the movie: somewhat nerdy people, mostly male, ages 12 and up. Sadly though, with the sheer number of expansions coming out, the game has gotten increasingly difficult to learn... I have tried to teach this game to many of my friends who are much younger than I, and almost all of them younger than about age 16 seem to have very little ability to build squads, fly ships, even remember to use all the cards on the table! The sheer nerdiness required means that I also struggle to get any of my friends who are female to play this game either... I'm not intentionally gender/age stereotyping, it's just that of the thirty or so people I know who play this game, only one is female and only two are younger than age 18. I really love the game, but I do wish that it was easier to teach new people and a little more accessible. I really appreciate what this article was trying to accomplish!

At least she's still a cool character. Princess Leia comics were one of Marvel's more well-done titles. I'm guessing there's an old-canon pilot who's been displaced by Norra Wexley in the Battle of Endor as well.

'Lore' lol. Always a sore spot for us fans.

Frankly, if it isn't in a live action movie, I really don't count it anyway. That's not say I don't like Clone Wars or Rebels or certain video game products. But seriously, whatever 'K' wing :D

It's really only a personal choice for me. I don't play this game to bash my skull in tournaments, and while FFG makes fine products, I'll buy another TIE/FO over the next 'how many solar panels can we add' fighter ;)

It's all fun though. No need to get bent over the unstoppable tide of ancillary products from something so ridiculously popular. It was going to happen no matter what. Everybody wants a piece of the Star Wars universe, and if they can make their mark, they will.

Yup - Horton Salm, to be precise, as the Y-Wing pilot who both entered and exited the DS2's superstructure.

A friend of mine asked if he could play X-Wing for less than $100. I gave him a rebel list that just involved two T-70's and a K-Wing (in the days before K-Wings were made from unobtanium). He was pretty happy...although his opponents were less so because, ya know, Miranda.
