R2D2 Idea

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

What if R2D2 when flying in a T-65 could "download" and combine the upgrades of any 2 other astromechs or his own upgrade with 1 other astromech ability.

So when flying R2D2, with Non-Biggs T-65s because R2D2 doesnt trust that maniac, you can choose to download one additional Astromech upgrade basically or swap the regen out right for 2 others.

It makes sense that an astromech could "download" another droids programming. And if any of em could it would be R2D2, particularly while riding in the ship he is most familiar with.

Example of resulting options:

Luke: PTL + BB8 + R2 Astromech + Engine Upgrade

Wedge: Stay On Target + R3 + Targeting Astromech + Vectored Thrusters

Ya know and stuff...

No idea how the costs would work.

No idea how hard it would make designing future astromechs.

No idea if it would break stuff.

It would break regen....probably...

Oh and also in addition to combining 2 mech upgrades R2D2 would add a Tech mod to the T-65.

R2D2 would be the first droid with his own Title modification basically but only available while flying a T-65. :)

If every droid could download every other droid's programming, why not just make a single droid with different programming? Also why would it only work on the T-65

I know gameplay > fluff but this one requires a bunch of unique rules to fix a single ship, when there's still plenty of design space that could fix the T-65 without having to make up even more rules.

R2D2 isn't what is broken.

I think it would be much simpler from a gameplay point of view if you said:

Rogue Squadron (or Wraith Squadron or Partisan or whatever the hot squadron idea of the week is)

Title, X-Wing Only, Rebel Faction Only (or however you prefer to call out the T-65 and not the T-70)

Your upgrade bar gains the "astromech" upgrade. You may equip two modifications. You may not equip Astromechs of cost 4 or more.

Cost 0

Now the X wing can just take 2 droids not named R2D2 (sure, you can still technically regen via R5P9, but he's not that good on a T65). And by saying you can take two mods with the title (one of which will likely be integrated astromech, which will actually give you TWO extra health) you're encouraging people to run T-65s with the title instead of with the R2D2 regen-bot. Now R2D2 plants his shiny droid dome inside of Corran Horn's ship because 3 years later and we still don't have Whistler in the game.

I agree. This makes a bunch more sense and is more practical and logical in every way.

On the other hand...giving select hero level Astromech's like R2D2 or BB-8 or Chopper their own mech titles could be a pretty unique design space to mess with.

I once suggested a similar fix for X-wings.

Basic programing update. Mod 0 points. Rebel only. X-wing only.

Before setup place one non-unique astromech upgrade on this card(without paying the Squad cost). Your equipped astromech gains the ability of this non-unique astromech in addition to its own.

You may equip an additional modification.

New stuff:

You can use your droid as one time bomb (use back maneuvers) kind of seismic charge (1 damage/1 ion token)
