Noobie question

By Evanist, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi everybody!
Me and my brother have just acquired a new core set of this awesome looking game, and in a cuple of days we will be playing our first game (yeah, I know is a disgrace having a rebel scum in my own family... but I have no choice).
We have decided to play a cuple of games with just the core set before invest more money in different expansions. So, I have created a cuple of test fleets using just the components of the core set, but I want them to be the more balanced as possible. So, I would be very thankful if you could give me a piece of advise about this fleets or if there is better options for our first games.

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 180/180

Commander: General Dodonna

Assault Objective: Custom Objective
Defense Objective: Custom Objective
Navigation Objective: Custom Objective

[ flagship ] CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- General Dodonna ( 20 points)
- Dodonnas Pride ( 6 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
= 77 total ship cost

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)
= 57 total ship cost

1 Luke Skywalker ( 20 points)
2 X-Wing Squadrons ( 26 points)

Faction: Galactic Empire
Points: 177/180

Commander: Grand Moff Tarkin

Assault Objective: Custom Objective
Defense Objective: Custom Objective
Navigation Objective: Custom Objective

[ flagship ] Victory I-Class Star Destroyer (73 points)
- Grand Moff Tarkin ( 38 points)
- Defense Liaison ( 3 points)
- Gunnery Team ( 7 points)
- H9 Turbolasers ( 8 points)
= 129 total ship cost

1 "Howlrunner" ( 16 points)
4 TIE Fighter Squadrons ( 32 points)

Thank you for your time! ^^

Looks fine. I believe the game comes with a specific tutorial battle you may want to consider. Welcome to the game and I hope you both enjoy it.

The only issue is the victory running h9s against an electronic countermeasures corvette and a double brace nebulon.

In that scenario its a truly useless card.

Thanks! It comes with a learning scenario, with the naked ships and squadrons, but after that I want to give it a try with some of the upgrades before buying anything :)

Mmmm... then maybe I can change it with another thing, like an extra Tie fighter squadron

I definitely agree that you should run the tutorial game a couple of times. Get he rules down and then start adding upgrades.

Welcome, and don't hesitate to ask questions. There are many people one here that will help you out.

Thanks! I will definitely run the learning scenario first of all, this fleets were for the next battles... I am just bad explaining myself xD

The biggest thing I don't like about the learning scenario is that it has you flipping who gets to activate first each turn. Remember when you play a normal game that one player keeps the first activation every turn, and it's whoever has the fewest fleet points that decides if they want first or second.

Overall I agree with what the others say, and approve of your fleet. The only thing I would change is to make the CR90A a CR90B, as that way you have more blue dice to use Dodonna's Pride. At the moment, you are depending on 2 blue dice out of 5 (when double-arcing) to come up with a critical hit symbol (2 per die or 4 out of 16 facings possible = 1/4th chance?).

...and you have to cancel your red dice to resolve the crit effect. The universe has decreed that you will never crit with your blue dice on a CR90A with Dodonna's Pride unless both your red dice are double hits.

Actually, this is a common misunderstanding that has been floating around since forever. The Learn to Play rules never state that first player changes hands each round. Even in the 'Learn to Play' scenario the Rebel player keeps it for the whole 6 turns.

There are a few paragraphs that, if not read carefully, can leave the reader with the impression that first player changes hands each turn.

Exactly. I think people might also be confusing it with the unlimited rounds deathmatch in the RRG under Optional Rules, which does have changing initiative and no objectives.

Thank you all for your answers! Luckily tomorrow I will try the tutorial and, if the time allows it, a game with the fleets (with the modifications you had suggested) :)

Good luck...it is a great game.

If your brother is a Rebel Scum, then there is only one recommendation: Destroy him!

Fifthing the "don't do Dodonna's Pride on the Corvette A".

Check out this link when you're ready to move on from the starter set. I hope you enjoy the game, it's an excellent way to kill time with friends.

Or an excellent way to kill friends with time, if you slow play them, a yuk yuk yuk.

How do I change my profile picture to just be Fozzie Bear? I make enough terrible jokes for it to be a good plan, really.
