Collosion or not

By Guest, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, last night I played an X-Wing match and the following discussion broke loose:

1) Manouver is revealed

2) Manouver template is placed

3) Ship is picked up and placed on the end of the manouver template.

4) Manouver template almost touches an obstacle but just almost. So no, the manouver template does not touch the obstacle marker.

5a) Here I would contiue to Check Pilot Stress then Actions. I would not consider this a fly throug or collsion with an obstacleof any kind. So no damage applied, no actions canceled, attack as usual.

5b) Oposing player does not conclude. He declares that, since the ships base does overlap with the obstacle when moved along the manouver template this has to be considered a fly through with an obstacle. So damage dice is rolled, action canceled but attack as normal.

What do the rules say? Please reference page. Thank you!

FYI: Option 5B was used. Altough I believe this to be incorrect.

Read the core rule book again, and do what it says, don't do what it doesn't say.

Steps 1-4 are exactly what the rule book says to do. No where does it mention "fly your ship along the maneuver template keeping the nubs centered. If the ship base hits an obstacle, then suffer its effects." Instead, the rule book says place the template at the front of the ship, place the rear of the ship on the other side of the template. If the ship base overlaps or the template overlaps, suffer the effects.

5A is the correct ruling.

P.S. you can still shoot even if your template hits an asteroid. You can only not shoot if your base is in contact with it.

FAQ. Last page (23):

"Q: When a ship executes a maneuver, is the entire width
of the ship considered to be moving along the maneuver
template and possibly hitting obstacles?
A: No. Only the maneuver template itself and the final position of the ship are
considered when determining if a ship hit an obstacle."

I knew it!

Thank you!

Also - Rules Reference, page 13:

"When a ship executes a maneuver, it is picked up from its starting position and placed in its final position. The full width of the ship’s base is ignored except in its starting and final positions."

This is a common mistake newer players make, but as long as your template or final position of the ship do not overlap, there is no overlap. If it did, it would present a lot more problems for Large ships trying to maneuver around obstacles.
