Store Championship 6/10: Ready to Play - Columbia, SC

By USCGrad90, in X-Wing Battle Reports

31 people at the tournament with a big group from Charlotte, NC, 1 player from Sweden, and players from all around South Carolina.

My List: [99] Fenn Rau (Attani, Autothrusters, Title) Old Teroch (Attani, Autothrusters, Title) Manaroo (Attani, Seismic Torp, Ion Projector, K4 Security Droid, Rigged Cargo Chute, Unhinged Astromech)

I know the typical meta list is a 96 point bid, but I wanted to do something a little different and have something to provide some aggresive attack options with the TL and the 3 greens. on Manaroo. I'll try to provide as much detail as I can remember.

Game 1: Chase Green - Asajj/Dengar/Inaldra. Chase kept this one pretty simple and brought Inaldra as a focus generator to skirt outside of the prmary battle.

Chase set up in the top left corner and I set up in the bottom left with Manaroo closest to the center of the mat. We both came out slow and Inaldra went right along the mat edge. About the 3rd round, we fired and Chase got Manaroo down to 4 hull. I managed to damage Asajj, but was definitely behind. The next round, he managed to take out Manaroo and I managed to have Fenn Rau in position to one-shot Inaldra. Not too long after, he was able to take out Teroch, leaving Fenn to face a very wounded Asajj and nearly full health Dengar. I managed to kill Assaj, but had a one hull Fenn Rau going against Dengar. With time running out, I got at Range 1 and took a killing blow from Dengar. I managed to save my focus and deliver a shot that got Dengar down to half points.

Loss 0-1 [77-100]

Game 2: Lindsey Morris - Luke/Tycho/2x Green Awings. Lindsey had Swarm Leader/R2D2 with Integrated Astromech on Luke, PTL on Tycho and Snapshot on the Awings.

Lindsey setup near the middle of the mat in a diamond with the 2 Greens on each side Tycho leading point and Luke in the back. I setup with Manaroo left of center, Fenn to the left Flank and Teroch on the right. Lindsey came out slow and I moved up fairly quick with a boost on the 2 Starfighters. I noted that there was an asteroid to the left of her squad that would be close if she banked toward Manaroo and Fenn. She did, so when I moved Manaroo I used the Seismic Torp to blow up the rock. I managed to take a shield off of one of the Green pilots, but Luke wasn't affected. I flanked out of arc on the right with Teroch and Fenn on the left, keeping her from using Snap Shot. I managed to kill one Awing and damage another, which kept Luke from using evades for Swarm Leader. Lindsey had moved Tycho forward far enough to attack Manaroo at range 2 and take 1 shield. The next few rounds I was able to get range 1 shots from Fenn and Teroch. Lindsey managed to get Manaroo down to 4 hull for half points before I finished killing the rest of her ships.

Win 1-1 [100-18]

Game 3: Archibald Zimnoyi (Sweden) - Fenn Rau/Ndru/Talonbane. Archibald had PTL/Stealth Device/Title on Fenn and VI/Homing missles/Guidance Chips/Glitterstim on Ndru and Talonbane.

Archibald setup with Ndru in the left corner, Talonbane near the center, and Fenn to the right. I set up similarly to way I did with Lindsey. I came out the gate fast, hoping to get Manaroo in a position to block Talonbane who was directly across. Archibald moved Fenn out with a 5 straight plus boost to try to flank on the right and 2 straight with Ndru and Talonbane. The next turn, I moved Manaroo up, but failed to get close enough to block Talonbane. I had Fenn at an angle to attack Talonbane, hoping to block movement by Ndru, but he 1 banked and targeted Fenn. Talonbane moved up 2 and also targeted Fenn. I did manage to move Teroch and barrel roll into a position to block his Fenn Rau. I was close enough to get an extra focus on Fenn from Manaroo to help with the coming missle attacks. I had initiative and managed to get a hit on Talonbane. He hit Fenn with both missles and did 2 damage and a Damaged Engine crit, making turns red. I managed to put some more damage into Talonbane with Manaroo. Next turn I did a hard 1, dropped the debris field in Talonbane's path and focused. I turned Teroch inside and Target locked Fenn Rau. For my Fenn Rau, I look a hard 1 left with stress to face Ndru, knowing both Talonbane and Ndru would go after Fenn. My gamble paid off and a 2 bank put Ndru just millimeters in front of Fenn. Talonbane banked down to the side of Fenn, taking a stress from the debris but no damage. His Fenn banked under Manaroo and into range to attack my Fenn. I one-shotted Ndru and Fenn then died as I expected. Manaroo could not get a hit through his Fenn 5 dice range 1 defense roll. The next round I managed to kill Talonbane and it left a healthy Teroch and Manaroo with 2 shields chasing Fenn. It took a bit for Teroch to catch up and I managed to move Manaroo into a position to block Fenn while taking only a few damage I was able to Ionize him twice, which allowed Teroch to get in range 1 and finally get a hit through his Stealth device. I eventually managed to kill Fenn and still have a healthy Teroch and half health Manaroo at the end.

Win 2-1 [100-50]

Game 4: Cory Wilson - Boba/Kath. My friend Cory who rode to the store with me was also 2-1 and unfortunately we had to face each other. He had started 2-0 and lost a close 3rd match, so I knew this would take some work. He had Fearlessness/Recon Specialist/Autoblaster Cannon on Boba, and PTL/Engine/HLC on Kath. I knew I had to try to avoid range 1 of Boba and stay clear of Kath's front and back arcs.

Cory setup with Boba near the center and Kath on the far right. I again placed Manaroo near the center and Teroch on the left and Fenn on the right. Cory came down the side fast with Engine coming toward me, while I starting going after Boba. I managed to fire off a Seismic and get one damage on Boba the second round. Follow-up attacks quickly took Boba to half points. Fenn took some HLC damage from Kath. I blocked Boba the next round with Manaroo and used Teroch to go after Kath. After some chasing, Cory managed to block Fenn with Kath, but not before he was able to do more damage to Boba. Fenn died that round, but the next round I was able to kill Boba. Attacks from Manaroo and Teroch took Kath to half points and we ended the game at time.

Win 3-1 [74-32]

Game 5: Dan the Destroyer (Charlotte) - Fenn/Teroch/Manaroo. Dark Mirror Match! Dan was running the Meta version of the list at 96 points with R4 Agromech and Tactician. Before we started, the TO told us that if we won, we were in the final 4. Wow - thanks for the added pressure! For reference, I will call his ships Manny, OldT, and FennR.

Dan set his ships in the right corner and I put mine near the middle. He gave me initiative. He took Manny and OldT to the left, while FennR wen straight down the right side for a flank. I took Manaroo 4 straight up the middle with Fenn and Teroch following. I did another 4 straight to put Manaroo at the edge of the uppermost rocks around Range 3 from the edge of the mat. My Teroch banked right to go after a flank around the rocks on Manaroo and focused. My Fenn banked right, running into Manaroo, but with the focus from Attani. Dan turned his OldT down with Manny and FennR turned in and barrel rolled up to avoid having to go through an asteroid the next turn. I had a range 3 shot on Manny and put some damage on his shields. Dan fired on Teroch with all 3 ships, but asteroids bonus and autothrusters only allowed 1 damage through. Manaroo had a range 2 shot on Manny and managed to clear off his shields and 1 hull. Next turn, I took Manaroo 2 straight and took a free target lock on Manny and a focus. Teroch turned a hard 1 right, putting my back to Manny and OldT, but sucessfully blocking Dan's FennR. My Fenn got position to put damage on FennR at range 2. Dan put some damage on Teroch, getting a Loose Stabilizer and Structural Damage. I managed to put damage on FennR and get Manny down to 2 hull. Next round, I turned hard 1 right and used the Seismic torp to hit an asteroid near Manny and OldT. Luckily my Teroch was just outside of range 1. Manny took another damage. Manny turned toward my Fenn and ended up on a rock. Old T moved toward Manaroo and ended up overlapped, but no ion. His FennR came up on the side of Manaroo at range 1. I turned Fenn and Teroch down away from combat. Dan only managed to take 2 shields from Manaroo and I ended up killing Manny on the rock. Next round I moved 2 straight and dropped the debris field on top of OldT. He ended up having to go through a second time when he moved and was double stressed. FennR also moved through the debris and got double stressed. We did a lot of circling after that while he cleared stress and and I cleared Teroch's crits. I eventually killed FennR while he killed my Teroch. Time was eventually called, ending with his 1 hull Teroch out of range and my Fenn and Manaroo still on the Board.

Win 4-1 [66-30]

I looked at the board and saw I was in 4th, so decided it was time to go to the bathroom. When I got back, they were passing out prizes and they called me for 5th place. Turns out that the tournament program had recorded one player's game as a "Modified Win" which put him in 5th on the list - so I was a bit disappointed but could tell by MOV, he should have actually been 2nd after Swiss. 4th place was 698 MOV versus my 686, so I came really close to getting in.

Overall, a good day after a rough start and I got to meet a lot of neat guys from Charlotte and Archibald from Sweden. The store provided door prizes and some extra support including store credit, so I was able to get some card sleeves and a small ship in addition to my range ruler and alt art card.

Nice write-up. 5th place :( . Just happened to me yesterday. Glad you got some store cred though. That always helps dull the pain of barely missing the cut.
