How about?

Yes, I'm inexperienced in this game and haven't the amazing knowledge and abilities of 95% of this forum but....what about these modifications to sanctioned games:

1) Fleet commanders must be on large base capital ships

2) Max the number of fighters/bombers at 20% of your fleet points

3) I'm not sure....

I just so want to get good at this game; and right now it's hard when you're playing tourney guys; real hard....and frustrating, I don't own that many fighter/bombers/flotillas (none of the latter yet).

.....yea, it's probably a dumb idea.

1 - I usually put my commander on my largest ship because flotillas are too easy to kill (if you have accuracies). But I don't care if other people don't.

2 - Heck no. I want fighters to be a big part of the game.

3 - You are probably going to want to buy some flotillas and fighters. Good news they are the cheapest part of the game. However with Sloan coming out soon your basic TIEs are going to be really good.

I just won a store championship with just 5 TIEs. (One of them was that named guy who is hard to shoot at). But you can play with minimal fighters. All you need to do is slow down your opponents fighters, a couple damage from fighters here or there is not usually a problem. But unanswered waves of bombers can be devistating.

Generally, while well intentioned, I'm not sure the two ideas there will end well (commanders on Large base ships is rather restrictive given how expensive those vessels run, and slashing fighters that far makes them a lot easier to ignore, which FFG fairly clearly doesn't want). Regarding doing well in tournaments, you can absolutely do well without either significant fighter coverage or flotillas. It's more important to have a fleet whose strengths and weaknesses you understand, and have targeting and maneuver plans worked out ahead of time. If you're interested in testing some expansions before buying them (at all or in large quantities), I suggest using VASSAL since games (and minis) in there are totally free thanks to our own @Green Knight. If you have any more specifics about the faction or playstyle you like to run, I'm sure there are many players on here that would be more than happy to give you pointers and help make you a better player.
