overlapping asteroids/debris clouds

By cannj12, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Somewhat new to the game but have just started using asteroids and debris clouds. Wanted to clarify, if my maneuver template overlaps an asteroid but the end of the template allows me to land flat on the game board, do I still consider that overlapping and therefore lose Actions and have to roll a dice on this? Or is overlapping only when my ship base physically lands on the asteroid/debris cloud?

If your template overlaps, you lose your action and roll for damage (asteroid) or gain stress and roll for damage (debris). If your base ends there, you ALSO can't shoot (asteroid).

So, that leads to my next question. If my template overlaps another ship but my ships base clears that ship does that mean I clear the ship or have I overlapped that ship?

@cannj12 Look up "Moving Through" on page 14 of the Rules Reference.

I guess thinking about this in 3D doesn't work with obstacles as it does with ships. Thanks for the help.

Indeed. Though you can think about ships as being relatively small, while asteroids and debris is much larger so you can't avoid it like you can a ship.

Ok, changing the subject for a moment. Are there any rules as to whether or not you have to roll attack/defense dice all at once or one at a time? And, if rolling one at a time whats the rule on a dice striking another and changing what it landed on?

Nope, but if someone is rolling one at time, I would verbally call out the results as they happen. Then if a die gets bumped to a different result, both players can agree what it was. It would also not surprise me to see someone rolling one at a time to be called out for slow play in timed matches.

Just my personal opinion, but roll them all at once and you avoid unnecessary issues.

General player consensus is that you should roll the dice all at once, because it is faster and reduces confusion.

It's a dark day when we need to have Official Rule Clarification on how to roll some dice.

I knew a guy that used to do just this. He would roll one at a time and if a die came up with an unfavorable result, he would attempt to knock it with his next die in the hopes that it would roll onto a better result. He tried this at a major national event and was ejected for cheating (dice manipulation). In a small country like mine, it pretty much killed any chance of him ever attending another similar sized event. Word gets around rapidly.

At the very least, an opponent could complain that it is unnecessary stalling. Roll them all at once to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

It really shouldn't be a big issue. This was just something that happened between me and the neighbor as we were playing. Sometimes we roll all of the dice and then sometimes we roll one at a time more when you're coming down to the last few points on one of the bigger ships and you want to pull out the drama of trying to save it. But we had an incident where one of the dice did bump another one and it changed and we basically kind of looked at each other and it was like okay what do we do now.

Hopefully I don't get a ejected from my neighbor's garage for bumping the dice it definitely wasn't intentional. I think from now on I will be rolling all of them together and I think he should be too just to keep everything simple and not confusing.

If it's just a casual game then it's kinda whatever. Though if you are rolling one at a time for the drama then wouldn't you be paying attention to each die roll? if one gets knocked, just set it back to the rolled result?

That's what let us to ask the question. Was we weren't really sure if when rolling the dice, where they technically in their final resting position after the individual dice was rolled or were they in their final resting position after all dice were rolled. It was really not a controversy it was just more of a question as to how to interpret the dice at this point I think I got my answer and and we know what we should be doing in the future just to avoid any confusion I greatly appreciate all of the help guys it's been tremendous thank you.

Wait! When maneuvering, the template touches asteroid/debris, roll/check effects, but if not on asteroid when maneuver completed you can shoot? Clarification, please?

Correct. If you are ON an asteroid during the combat phase, you don't get to shoot. If you are NOT on an asteroid during the combat phase, you do get to shoot. It doesn't matter if you touched the asteroid earlier in the round or had your template go over it. The combat phase rule only cares where you are at the moment it is your turn to shoot. This means you can even land on an asteroid, then be granted an action (such as via Squad Leader or Airen Cracken) that lets you barrel roll or boost off the asteroid, then get to shoot when your turn comes.
