Red Challenge Rewards

By Agent2, in Runebound

Hey everybody, new here to Runebound. Just picked this up to play with my girlfriend and we're loving this game. We did have a lot of gaps in the rules that didn't make sense at some parts, but these forums have been more than helpful and I've found answers to most of my questions plus more things that I didn't even think to question (like Red Scorpion can cancel/deflect more than just 1 damage but it can heal 1 attack per turn). So on that note, great job everybody in the Runebound forums!

Now for my actual question is about the Dragon Runes you get from beating a Red Challenge. ex. Dragonlord Eregax - Reward : Take this card. It is now the Dragon Rune of Eregax. Your Hero may activate this card to inflict 3 <3 [Hearts] instead of making a ranged attack.

Now what I'm curious about is if I use this card, will that take up my Hero's attack for the turn? So say I'm focused on Magic on my hero, and I want to use this to damage my opponent during the Range Phase, would I still be able to attack during the Magic Phase? (excluding any cards or abilities that grant me 2 attacks per Combat Round)

Also, my other question directly related to that. When this card is activated, do you just completely skip the Ranged Phase and just do 3 damage? Or do I still have to defend againts a Ranged Attack?

My assumption on this is that if you activate this card, you can't attack in Melee or Magic Phase and this card uses up your attack for the combat round. And for the 2nd part that the Range Round would just count as a successful attack and rolling is necessary.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I am pretty new to this game myself, but if I fairly sure that if you use the Dragonlord Rune to do 3 ranged damage, then that uses up your attack for the round, so you would only be able to defend in the magic phase. My interpretation of that card was that you would do 3 damage without having to roll any dice, it would be an automatic 3 damage (but you wouldn;t be able to use another activate to use card during that round), so you wouldn't need to defend against ranegd as well. The only situation in which you could use both the rune and attack in the magic face would be if you were the character that can take 2 fatigue to attack in another phase (Silhouttee I believe), or if you held the always on staff item that allows you to attack in a second round (I forget the name but I remember it costs 12 gold). Happy Runebounding!

At least as far as thsi card goes, I agree it consumes your attack. This is mainly because it says "deal 3H instead of making a ranged attack ." By contrast, if it has said "deal 3H during the ranged phase" or something like that, then I would go the other way.

Thanks for the responses, they have been very helpful. I'll be sure to have it consume the attack next time I play. Thanks again!

And what about Dragon lord Droxor. What about his reward? Does it mean that I can attack twice in the same phase(ranged or melee) or that I have an extra attack in the ranged or melee phase if i didn't attack in that phase yet?

Thank you very much.

Text is not that clear, for this reason I think both options are allowed.

If you want you can make two ranged attacks, one ranged and one melee, or two melee attacks.
