oxymoron/contradiction: Ascetic/Gadgeteer or Ascetic/Artisan etc.

By EliasWindrider, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

the original motivation (problem solved) was that I was converting a character over from RCR who thematically was on the fence about being an ascetic, and the only thing game mechanically stopping the character was that he carried a lightsaber, blaster pistol, and grapnel spike launcher which total 3 enc which puts him 1 over the 2 enc limit for iron soul, empty soul, and mind bleed.

Solution to the problem is to get an security s-5 heavy blaster from keeping the peace page 43 and apply either the jurry rigged talent (e.g. from gadgeteer) or having an artisan friend add 2 hard points, and then apply the "stripped down" attachment with 1 extra reduce enc mod.

but that got me curious about the kinds of oxymoron ascetic/tech-loving-spec the members of this forum could come up with, so let's make it something of a competition about how geared up you can make a character while keeping him to 2 enc or less. And my suggestion is to equip them with a jedi utility belt from page 52, which gets them a whole lot of equipment for zero enc.

so on your marks, get set, go!

since no one else is participating, I'll post another tip,

"A character wearing cargo clothing may carry up to 3 items of encumbrance 1 or lower without those items counting towards his encumbrance value", page 47 of desperate allies. the down side is that prevents you from wearing most other armors, but on page 49 of desperate allies, "second skin" armor is designed to be worn *under* clothing.

so, conceivably RAW allows an ascetic/gadgeteer/artisan to stuff two weapons (two copies of jurry rigged) that are normally encumbrance 6 but are in this case encumbrance 1 (-3 enc for stripped down, -2 enc for jury rigged) into a pair of cargo pants without touching his 2 encumbrance total.

Really simple idea: Ascetic/Outlaw Tech using the Utility Belt talent. You have almost nothing in the way of equipment, but when you really need something, it just so happens that you have it in your belt...

Similarly, you could combine it with Mechanic and use the Contraption talent: You don't have anything on you, but with a spool of wire and some paper clips (using Go Without to provide the tools), you can build something on the spot that'll solve the problem.

Of course, as soon as he draws one of those weapons to use it, it regains its encumbrance, since it's no longer being carried in the cargo clothing...

I really like the first one. Very ascetic, 'carry only what you need'. How do you know what you need? Trust in the force...

For a whole 1 enc, notice the cargo clothing can carry 3 enc 1 items, so he just has to put another 1 enc item into the third pocket first (gadgeteer only has 2 copies of jurry rigged) and it's not a game mechanical problem

When I was a kid, my best friend said batman (Adam west, R.I.P.) had a bat futility [sic] belt, because the belt made resisting Batman futile. I mean come on, he had "bat shark repellent" in that thing, it was bat sh1t crazy :P

Consular Asectic + Heavy + Gadgeteer. 3 Ranks of Burly + 1 rank of Jury Rigged.

AKA Encumbrance 2 Missile Tube. For all your wilderness-loving, luddite, hermit Jedi needs.

You need 295XP just to make it happen, provided we are including the special Ascetic talents Iron Soul & Empty Soul, so it's not a quick process but it's certainly doable.
