"Whispering" - I can't imagine it was particularly subtle! The UH-1 certainly makes a racket.

He said the Cobra (AH-1) not the Iroquois (UH-1).

The AH-1 was developed from the UH-1 was what I meant. I haven't heard an AH-1 first hand but I have heard plenty of UH-1s.

They're still pretty noisy, but quite for a chopper.

The Bell Huey Cobra was the definitive U.S made attack helicopter during the Vietnam Nam police action(because congress never made a declaration of war.) The v.c. And the nva called these choppers "whispering death".

Whispering refers to the ways the main rotor blades could be adjusted for different flight. The whisper adjustment was an early stealth mode. With this type of flight, the "whup whup whup " sound was discernible but only quieter and often times the enemy didn't notice until the cobras were right on top of them.

also look up the armament and the "death" part becomes very apparent. There is an excellent movie called"we were soldiers once" that tells of the beginnings of helicopter warfare.
