Would you bet on Latari spearmen or swordmasters?

I like my non shield 1 handers but that could be because fencing was one of the few sports I enjoy...

Fencing was not available were I'm from, we did have archery though. :)

Maybe an influence towards elves.

Not that it matters very much since it is based on aesthetic but weren't pole arms the most popular weapon to be used historically because of their reach over swords? Also Were cavalry historically ever not a pain in the *** to deal with? I would think Some kind of movement slow or traps or something to at least funnel units in might be an interesting counter for cavalry. Perhaps too much when you can also choose where the terrain is laid during setup but maybe.

Polearms, pikes, spears, and lances were preferred because of their anti-engaging and anti-cavalry perks more than better reach over a sword. Gotta remember theyre mounted on a wooden stick in most cases to keep it light, which a sword user can just chop off if you arent careful. However if youre on a horse you probably cant move nimbly enough to do that, same for if youre in numbers charging a point.

Polearms were also easier to forge for obvious reasons. A well balanced and sturdy sword was extremely expensive.

Fencing wasnt a thing in my area either, though i grew up in the middle of nowhere so the only sport we had period was football and basketball. Not a sports fan lol so no thank you. I would have gladly gone into Archery though if i had the chance since the few times ive touched a bow i've been oddly accurate, even though i cant shoot an M16 for jack while i was in the military lol.

im going to shutup now so i stop derailing LOL

Parakitor and I did fencing in college! He was the president of the club. Good memories. Never got to try archery, though. [Sorry for continuing to derail the thread.]

I find the notion. of chopping a wood shaft off with a sword quite dubious. A wood is pretty hard, B swords weren't that sharp (few exceptions exist). An axe may be able to get the weight/momentum required but even then it is going to be the bludgeon that does it. If they were that poor of wood, you wouldn't be able to use them as a weapon.

The biggest draw, historically, is that spears are easy to make, easy to use, and effective.

Every culture on earth developed the spear, and it doesn't take extensive training to show a mob how to jam it into the bad guy.

Nobody is a bad*** with a sharp stick in their guts.
