Kylo Ren crew - Experiences

By IG88E, in X-Wing

Time has passed since he was first released. What are your experiences to play him (competitively).

I know he can be a big negative play experince when facing him, but I would like to hear some eyperiences regarding his effectivity.

PS0 and blinded pilot crits are the most obvious choices.

Haven't seen him in play as much as I feared, but when I have - yeah, NPE is the right call. Especially as his effect bypasses shields.

RAC seems to be the number one choice for supporting his ability, but I've seen him used on the Upsilon itself as well.

I use him on pretty much everything, Phantoms, TIE Shuttles, Decis, the list goes on. Even though the "Pilot" crits aren't as powerful as the "Ship" ones, I use him just to get around shields!

Kylo Ren seems to be growing as part of my local meta for many of the Imperial players. Whether its from RAC or from Kylo Ren pilot, he's there. Luckily enough, I haven't gotten paired up against many of those lists, but when I have, I used Boba Fett crew to kick Kylo Ren out of RAC's Deci so I haven't been a victim...yet

RAC and Vader with Kylo Crew can shut down matches. If you are a two ship list, don't expect one to be firing for two turns.

Anything more than two ships though and it gets less useful.

For example:
RAC with VI, Kylo, Palp and Engine
Vader with Predator, Engine, Title and ATC
99 points

That critical is happening and if you have two agility or less then it is pretty much a done deal.

Being blinded twice in a list that only attacks twice a turn is brutal. Being dumped to PS0 is lethal to lists as well. Hell, i have even seen the above RAC with Carnor and Kanan/Ashoka just stop playing. Ashoka doesn't want to shoot and can't spend her focus and the Ghost can't spend anything either whilst being reduced to a single TLT shot a turn for two turns.

Against swarms or four ship rebels, Kylo doesn't really play a crucial role but blinded pilot is always nice.

I played against him a few times. It really depends on which list you play to see whether you stand a chance or whether it's going to be auto-loss. Usually the best way of dealing with a Kylo Deci is: DO NOT BUMP! Make sure you can get as many shots in as you can.

When I fly a Kylo, it's always Chiraneau with VI and seasoning to taste. My go to wingmen are Wampa and Lieutenent Colzet with a fire control system.

With normal dice it utterly devastates any 2 ship list, and strongly handicaps 3 ship lists. Basically:

Blinded Pilot the damage dealer of the enemy list (Dengar, Fenn, Rey etc). Then target lock them with Colzet. In the turn they flip Blinded Pilot, colzet spends his target lock to flip it over again (you don't put any more damage on him to it's sure to be BP). Then Blinded Pilot the second ship. Then make them PS0, and so on and so forth. It's particularly brutal against Bossk and Rey, who simply can't defend themselves.

"Echo" (30)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Kylo Ren (3)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Darth Vader (29)
Predator (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)

Lieutenant Colzet (23)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
TIE/x1 (0)

Total: 100

I want this to work so bad, but I fly it so badly! The theory is that you can lock Dengar or Assaj down (the two most popular a-holes in my meta) with a no-shoot crit in the first engagement. Keep Colzet around the disabled target flipping that crit turn after turn so it can't engage while Vader and Echo destroy the other ship(s).

in reality... Echo dies, I cry, and go home riding down a river of my own tears.

I was very much on the Kylo hate train for a while, but after seeing him in action--and actually flying him--I don't think he's THAT bad. He's not exactly fun to fly against, but he's not impossible to deal with, either. I've lost games where I've dealt two Damaged Cockpits and a Blinded, simply because the opponent was able to compensate for the loss.

The real issue I still have is that he's highly matchup dependent. Against a swarm, he's pretty much useless; against a two-ship list, he's practically an auto-win. He'll brutalize a Ghost, but might never punch through an ace's agility. I'm not a big fan of cards that can ruin someone's day just based on the matchup.

At this point, Kylo feels like a necessity on a Decimator to keep up with the JM5K, Fenn, and Attani lists. Without it, win % is low against them. With it, win % is 40/60 at best, when crits actually go through at the oppurtune times.

I have yet to play against kylo crew thank God. Did play against kylo pilot once but he never got to use ISYTDS on me.

With the list I'm currently running, it's possibly the worst matchup I could face. My ships are heavy on offense, low on defense. So if I'm not able to shoot for a couple rounds it's bad news.

This. I've taken a Kylo RACdraw list to a couple of events. I've done alright, but they're pretty much slug fests, with blinded pilot and optimal bumping just leveling the playing field.

I felt bad for the one MiranDash player I encountered, but that's about it. There are so many effing Dengar floating around that all you're doing is shutting off his revenge shot (which is still nice), or silencing his partner (varies in terms of usefulness).

Decimators are still crit magnets, and the Kylo pilot shuttle can just be saved for last.

I play both Kylo Pilot and Kylo Ren Crew. Kylo Ren Crew is good, definitely beatable, but it's certainly a NPE. Kylo Ren Pilot is not an NPE since it can be worked around by the opponent. The Crew should have never used ISYTD.

I've not flown with it much, I don't rate it really - there's so much more you could be doing with your action than betting on rolling crits. The only cost-effective way of getting a Kylo crit through is a TIE/Advanced with ATC, and even then they're wasting an action on TLing, not focus/evading. Of course you have RAC, but he really wants his action to go for other stuff like boosts or TLs to help his ability.

I've played a non-Kylo RAC + wingman build for a few months, and it does well mostly (FWIW rebel captive deals more with Mindlink than people think). Kylo matches are always difficult, but I've used the insane offensive power I can put out to kill most of their Kylo-carrier in turn 1 of engagement, then accepting that my RAC won't shoot/will be PS 0. Then the wingman can kill the kylo carrier mostly unscathed and move onto the opponent's wingman. If RAC got PS 0, he can block and still do damage, but blinded still hurts.

I've still yet to win a game, because it's a hard counter to my list, but I've got very close (range 3 Vader on 1 health killing a 3 health quickdraw with a focus...) which is a pretty good record in my opinion.
