4 ship Rebel Alpha with Dutch

By LagJanson, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Insane list combos. Did I manage to catch all the current fads? Oh wait, no Rebel jumpmaster. Oh well...

Experimenting (100)

Ahsoka Tano (18) - TIE Fighter
Crack Shot (1)

"Dutch" Vander (30) - Y-Wing
Extra Munitions (2), Plasma Torpedoes (3), R5-K6 (2), Guidance Chips (0)

Gold Squadron Pilot (26) - Y-Wing
Extra Munitions (2), Proton Torpedoes (4), Targeting Astromech (2), Guidance Chips (0)

On approach, Gold Sqdn led by Dutch focus... Beginning of combat Ahsoka provides Dutch with a target lock which he shares with his preferred wingman. Dutch fires first, potentially triggering R5-K6 and providing a lock to the second gold.

Next turn K-turn the Golds to fire a second volley of torpedoes.

You could also try Airen Cracken with VI to make sure Dutch gets the TL. You could fit it in by changing a Proton Torp to Plasma. If you change both proton Torps to Plasmas, then Cracken can carry a Thread Tracer and Guidance Chips. Increase your odds of getting all the locks you need.

Or if you want to keep the proton torps on the golds, you could use Lt Blount w/ thread tracers instead of Cracken. Blount also can't miss with his thread tracers, so in a way, is even more reliable than Cracken for that crucial first shooting TL. And you can throw any 0 pt EPT on him that suits your fancy.

I think thread tracers work much better than Ahsoka in this case, since with Ahsoka, RNG can screw your alpha strike (i.e. you are reliant on R5-K6 to make it work). With thread tracers, your alpha strike works as long as the z-95 has arc on your intended target.

@blade_mercurial Valid points. The reason I suggested Cracken over Blount is PS. Blount at PS6 could easily be dead before he gets a chance to fire. If Blount doesn't get PS-killed, he is absolutely more reliable than Cracken.

I thought about Cracken and Blount after you posted and it slowly dawned on me that this particular list and function has been around since the very early days. It's probably not seen for very good reason. Yes, I agree Cracken is the better choice, and even if the tracer misses, his ability allows for at worst two torpedoes still firing.

Well, the reason its not seen primarily is because there used to be a lot of arc-dodgers out there, and Soontir Fel laughs at Blount trying to get him in arc (even VI cracken can struggle against a really good Soontir player).

However, arc-dodgers are few and far between nowadays. And even when you see them, they are not necessarily PTL capable (such as Fenn in a mindlink list). So without that double action, they can't really escape Blount's arc quite so well. I think Blount can work fine in the current meta environment. But having said that, VI Cracken should too, since his thread tracer will still hit most things and as you say, guarantees at least 2 y-wings have TLs regardless.
