Planning to get custom made gaming table!

By Zazaa, in X-Wing

I have been planning to get custom made gaming table from a friend who has carpenters studio and he makes very appealing stuff. So I'm looking some inspiration from here's what it should include, I want to be able to use it for Epic gaming so it needs to be bit bigger, but I'm thinking that having folding option or make two tables that can be brought together, which would be better? We are most of the time playing casual 100p games so maybe one 3'x3' would do, but how much you guys think that there should be free space on the sides for cards, maneuver templates, dice and etc?

Is there some useful qualities that I should be adding to that table? I'm thinking that making maybe one 3'x3'+ some extra for cards etc, at first then I will see if I need other one to play Epic.

So ideas?

If you want some inspiration look here. If I could afford it, I would already have one.

It sounds like size is an important thing for you. If it's only ever for one game at a time, then you should be okay if you want a folding table. I would recommend starting with a 4' x 4' though - that gives 6'' on each side, or a full foot to the side if you move it off center. And then have 2 full length edges that fold for epic - really they don't need to be more than 18'', giving you the same 6'' space on all sides. If you wanted to get really fancy with the folding aspect, make the epic sides fold over on top of the regular table. Now you can outline the 3x3 area if you want, perhaps paint up some rebel and imp logos on the 6'' strips on either side, etc. Then when flips down, you have a brand new surface that you can mark up for the 6x3 epic games.

We have one at our flgs that I want to duplicate. It's 4' x 4'. That leaves 6" per side for cards and templates. It's also shorter than normal table heigth which makes it easier to sit at and play.

My recommendation is a 4' x 4' with two 1' drop leaves. They can be folded up for a 4' x 6' epic table or dropped down for standard play. Lockable rollers will make it easier to move around.

Some thought on how you play needs to be done. If your play style is to stand during games, make the table taller. Less back bending. If you sit make the table shorter, below normal table heigth. Easier to see distances.

That's just my take.

I made a 4x6 table. Its perfect for xwing because when u put 2 mats on it you have 6 inches left on each of the sides for cards.

My gaming table is Ikea Bjursta dining table ( 90/129/168x90 cm model). It has retractable side tables and all you really need for 100/6. Death Star mat goes a little bit over the deployment edges but doesn't really matter. Doesn't have dice towers or cup holders though...

These are great except for the price. Not saying they aren't worth it but too nice of a piece of furniture for the basement.

And if price is really no object:

Don't forget you'll want room for your cards, which a 3'x3' or 3'x6' table doesn't have.

I'm in the process of building my own gaming table. I went with a 42"x42" design, that folds up against the wall. It gives us enough space on the edges for templates, tokens, cards etc. The only think I with I had though of is cup holders. ;)

IMO the depth of the table should be almost exactly 36" and width should have the extra for cards and templates. That way you don't have to lean over all the equipment to move your ships.

These tables are perfect, bit pricey if you want everything from cupholders to plexiglass. All tho I could drop $2000 for nice table that would work as dining table as well. Would make my wife happy too to have more than one use. Their "traditional" size table with that cover top piece that makes it leveled and serves as dining table would be perfect almost. That cover top changes the size almost enough to give it size 3x6ft.

The thing is that we are using table for playing not only X-Wing, But also boardgames and roleplaying games like GURPS. We have 4 to 6 players in our "group". The ideal would be that we could get two X-Wing maps on the table in case we play Epic or there is more than one game, would be great if we could get two games at same time. Usually we have two games going same time in weekends and middle of week we usually have one game at the time. I'm pretty sure that this BoardgameTables won't send these to Europe. So question is is there similar company in Europe?

If I win lottery then I want this table, it is very cool looking apparatus! Maybe bit overkill, but hey that would be pretty wicked!

I'm thinking that $1000-2000 would be alright if it has neat high-end look and excellent quality and serves as dining table. I'm planning on building a gaming room, that would have shelf for my X-Wing pieces and other miniatures, some nice one with glass "windows", also there will be couch and seats around that gaming table, flat screen TV with Play Station and my computer as well.

I thought about this as well, but working with the space that I had available on my wall, I felt that the square option would be best. At this point, we haven't had any problems. Templates on one side, tokens and such on the other. Then we keep our ship cards and upgrades in front of us. :)

I bought four of their dice towers as gifts for my groomsmen. Turns out their shop was only 30 minutes north, so I even got to get a quick tour of the facility. Their stuff is absolutely top notch and at the top of my wish-list for if I ever win the lottery.

If you have a dedicated game-space where leaving a table out is not an issue, I see no reason to not go with a 4'x8' table. It has ample room for cards/planos/etc during a standard 3x3 game, though it also easily allows for two 3x3 games or a 3x6 Epic/Armada game with lots of spare space for templates and cards. Furthermore, it can serve as a great table for playing boardgames with 6-10 people, if you have a regular gaming group. Also, if you ever wanted to dabble in war games in the future, you'd have a table that could support it.

Depending on how legit of a carpenter your friend is, you could even have a nice stained dining-like table made up that can serve as a dining space or a gaming space. I've got a big 3x7 dining table, and it's hosted all sort of games and dinner parties over the years.

For me space is an issue because the table sits in the middle of our quite small living room between a bar counter and a couch.

A setup example with a crowded swarm list:

Sorry to boast about it but i love my table...

I have a nice, round coffee table in my basement, as well as a 34"x34" fold-up card table I bought from Bed Bath & Beyond for about $30.

Both are nice and have their uses, but are useless for x-wing.

I went to Home Depot and bought two pieces of 24"x48" (3/16" thick) chalk board. About $10 ea. They sell the same size pieces in mdf, peg-board, dry-erase whiteboard, etc. I went with the chalkboard because I liked the matte-black surface.

I flipped the two pieces over and ran a single piece of duct tape to hold them together (which has been holding flawlessly for about 6 months now).

When turned over and placed on either my coffee or card table, it's perfectly stable and everything for x-wing fits with room to spare.

When I'm done playing, the chalkboard table-top folds in half and I tuck it behind my basement door. It would also fit under or behind my couch if I wanted. Super light, durable, easy to store, $20. Awesome solution for what I was looking for.

I'm digging this solution, with just bit tuning and it would be bit stronger and more visually finished. It is also excellent material, can always draw with chalk if needed. Very sweet table!
