1st Tournament

By Drothar, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hey all,

i just got got into this game and I need some help making a tournament list for the store tournament in my area.

I have the starter set and maybe 30 dollars to buy new stuff.

Any advice on a decent list to make?

Any figures you really want to run? What about faction? Interested in being competitive or just having fun?

Well most of the figures in the starter are imperial, so your best options are there. Officers, troopers, and a couple dewbacks with that $30. You probably won't win with kind of list, but you won't suck either.

Make sure it isn't a requirement for you to have all of the tournament legal map tiles for this tourney, otherwise you need to buy a few of the mats OR Bespin/Jabba's Realm.

@FrogTrigger That is a very good point. Officially, you are required to have the maps. Of course, everyone is required, so if someone shows up without it wouldn't be a big deal, unless everyone shows up without.

Thanks for the tips. I'll check with the stores if I need the maps.

I like the scum although I gather they aren't the most competitive. But it would be cool to field Boba Fett

Oh and to add. I'm not to worried about being competitive. But I won't to be able to provide a good game for my opponent.

So if you've got 30 bucks and the core you could buy the Rangers and Jedi Luke and R2/Threepio? (is that over 30 american?) and run that list, they come with decent command cards (although unfortunately not the best of the hunter cards :/)

12 J. Luke
12 E. Rangers
3 Gideon
2 C3P0
2 Rebel High Command

3 R2D2 (possibly?)
3 Mak to go with the long range sniping?

But for the core only, the best faction out of that box is the Empire, however you are missing a key card for that faction which is Zillo technique, you need to buy Agent Blaise for that and a second E. Stormie pack to run two sets of those, or borrow the card at the event. And round it out with Terro possibly.

8 R. Royal Guard
9 E. Storm Trooper
9 E. Storm Trooper
2 R. Officer
2 R. Officer
7 Captain Terro
1 Rule by Fear
1 Zillo Techniqe

1 left for attachment of your choice.

That is my attempt, I am by no means a skirmish pro and there are many more qualified people for this than me here, it would be nice to see some of them chime in (Looking at your Worlds Crowd!!! @ryanjamal @brettpkelly @Masterchiefspiff) to contribute and help grow the community!

This is why this game could really benefit from some of those 101 articles X-Wing gets, it would have to be based around the assumption that the person already owns the core and wants to branch out from there to build a fun competitive list as cheap as possible. Maybe we need to take that upon ourselves to write as a collaboration? Come up with a few options for each faction? Ignoring map tiles obviously because that just blows the budget alone. Just assume that most established player bases are willing to map tile share at most tourneys. Could be a fun down time project between tournaments and releases.

Scum is hard because there isn't much that come in the base set for you to choose from. If you want you could try something like

Boba

IG-88 w/ Focused on the Kill

rJawa

rNexu

Gideon

Jyn

Temp Alliance

This would be a fun bounty hunter theme you could play. You'd have to buy IG-88, Jawa and Boba Fetts packs to field it. Should be around $30.

Just a forewarning Boba is not a competitive figure right now. By all means you can play him and have a great time but you would be handicapping yourself a bit by using him.

Please, please do not over pay for Boba Fett. Currently there are a few people who buy out a bunch of him and relist him at a stupidly high price. You shouldn't pay more than $12 for him. As pointed out, he currently isn't competitive though may be getting a upgrade soon.

Scum is very competitive but you would need a couple copies of Jabba's Relm and/or IG-88 and a Jawa. Now if you were to buy a big box, Jabba's Relm is the way to go. The jet strom troopers are good and pretty much every scum unit in there is good.

I still feel the cheapest bang for your buck is a couple of lizards. Stromtroopers are the easiest, and cheapest, thing to paint and dewbacks are not the most complicated model to paint, if you wanted to try your hand a painting.

Otherwise as Froggy pointed out, an alliance ranger pack, jedi luke, and either Hera/Chopper or 3P0/R2 is a good way to go for your budget if lizards aren't your thing.

I would say pick a faction first. $30 isn't quite enough to get you to a competitive list, but it is enough to get you some fun units to add to your collection.

Really, the cheapest way to have a competitive list is to buy Jabba's Realm (you only need one; sure a second elite Weequay is nice, but not worth it for the money). That alone, along with the core box, will be enough to field a good list.

For the rest I'd just echo what @FrogTrigger said. Terro and Blaise for Imperials, Jedi Luke and R2/3PO for Rebels (I would hold off on Rangers until you get JR since they're best with all of those sweet hunter cards).

Happy gaming!

I did my first tournament in February and facing a conundrum (no Jabba's Realm) I went Rebels. Had a lot of fun and ended up finishing second. Jedi Luke is a lot of fun to play. Elite alliance rangers are worth their cost even if they don't have access to some of the Hunter command cards. I think both heightened reflexes and call the vanguard come in that pack, and those are both very good. Gideon is an absolute must on the Rebels. Then you'll be deciding whether to get 3PO/R2 pack or the Hera/Chopper pack, and you'll probably play both figures from whichever you get. Unless you can pick up both. If I had to pick, I like Hera/Chopper.

something like:

Luke

elite Alliance Rangers

Gideon

Mak

Hera

C1-10P

Balance of the force

rebel high command.

If you can get the droids also, go 3PO instead of RHC, and you can choose between mak and R2. That's a pretty solid rebel list, minus a few potent command card. Good luck!

As an imperial at heart, here is what I would recommend:
15 rgc
18 2x estorm
3 r probe droid
4 2x r officer

it gives you six activations, and a bunch of attacks and you only have to buy 2 packs (RGC and Storms). It can be a pretty solid list, but you need to practice with the rgc for when best to bring him to bear.

Scum is currently the most competitive faction actually. In the top 16 from worlds this year 15 lists were Scum. Unfortunately most of the units they were using were from Jabba's Palace and some of the other blister packs and Boba Fett wasn't featured in any of them.

This looks like fun and if the store isn't too strict, you can run it without buying anything. You have 9 troopers and the RGC token, so just proxy the eTrooper card and you're good to go! If you enjoy it, you can always buy the packs afterwards. :)

.. and borrow the Royal Guard Champion from another player. If you can borrow both a second Stormtrooper deployment card and the RGC figure, then the venue does not even matter.

Could also see if anyone wants to meet up the night before for some practice games then test out a few different lists to see what you like best using proxies, buy the components you need to be tournament legal. OR as you've now just made new friends, borrow what you need :)

You can also practice on Vassal or Steam's Tabletop Simulator.

If you get a chance, share how you did with us. Good luck!

Thirty bucks is hard to put something else together with just the core set. My current list for the summer is:

Jabba

Shyla

Onar

E Weequay

Jawa

Chopper

3P0

Greedo

Black Market

So Jabba's realm and 5 character packs (though I'm guessing some of my command cards are other places - Hoth for sure). But you could sub R2 for chopper (since R2 comes with 3P0). Or you could drop black market and chopper to sub in Gideon and Temporary Alliance to buy one less pack either way if you did one of those.

But the imperial suggestions above are good for a cheap semi competitive list - though RGC takes finesse.

But I'd suggest going to the store or finding out who runs the group and talking with them to see what they can help you figure out and/or borrow. I know if i had someone in the local area who said they had the core set and wanted to get into skirmish side, I'd let them borrow anything they needed to get them hooked ;)

Wow. The feedback here has been great. My plan now is to talk to the boss to see if she'll let me get Jabba's Realm (Father's Day is coming up...). I'll post a list shorty.

Thanks again all!!
