Any news for a Descent style app?

By KrisWall, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

As per the topic title...

I read somewhere that FFG was working on a Descent style app for Imperial Assault, which would turn it into a truly co-op experience. If this is true, is there even a hint on timing? I'm super interested, but don't want to buy anything if the app isn't happening. I inherited a core box from a friend and none of us wants to play a many vs. one game, but we'd all play co-op. The group loves Descent and other app driven games like Mansions of Madness.

I will answer with a saying that was developed at this forum:

everytime someone asks about the app, the app is delayed by another month

:D

I have almost every Mini for this game and all the expansions. Being a campaign player and not interested in the Skirmish side, I can 100% say I am done with Imperial Assault until the App comes out.

I will continue to paint my minis but the game has seen no play for months, basically because it is not fun for players to be "against" the guy that knows WAY more than them about the game, and I have held back and tried my best to make it fun for them, but it's hard to judge that WHILE being the Game Master, and trying to enjoy my role as the Empire.

It's simply too much on my shoulders. I find running a straight Star Wars RPG easier and funner actually, and I think my players do too.

In summation, APP OR RIOT!!!!!

To answer your question, we've heard (again) recently that they're still working on it, but they haven't given any hints on when it will actually be released.

Have you tried play by forum? I thought I would never be interested in anything like it, but Imperial Assault changed my mind. And the rebels are so good nowadays that you really need to work for your wins (if you manage any).

Is there any kind of tutorial or quick guide anywhere on how to go about actually running the pbf campaigns? I'm talking about things like the die rolls, all of the banners, item cards, etc. that I see in all of the other campaigns on the geek. As for the maps that I see people post, I assume that they are done with Vassal?

I've been on the waiting list as a player but it's a bit of a slow climb to the top. I wouldn't mind giving it a go as an imperial but it's been the overhead that's been stopping me so far.

The Vassal IA Campaign module (maintained by me) provides more or less a whole system to have full campaign setup in it. If you have run a campaign in real life, with a bit of familiarizing yourself with the module you should have no issue with it. You can technically run a campaign online in real-time. I have not tried it, but I know a few groups have continued their campaign using the module when the players moved around the country.

The maps come in a save file which you should start with. Each map and other windows have a screenshot option. I also use an automatic Makefile+script file to crop the results for easy upload into a bgg thread.

I am running 2 campaigns now, so I have dented the waiting list a bit, and moved some no-shows to the end.

The IA Campaign module thread: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1560112/vassal-imperial-assault-campaign

The IA Vassal page has a link to the readme file with some helpful hints too.

(My geeklist has a list of other useful resources.)

Thanks a lot, A1bert, I appreciate it. I'll see if I can get some time this weekend to play around with Vassal a bit, then maybe I can dent that list a little further :)

Regarding the App stuff- that might be another thing we need a sticky for.

The FFG forums always seem extremely well moderated, but I never see anyone who is blatantly a mod posting. Any way we could possibly suggest the possibility of stickies directly to someone (assuming other members would be interested)?

The app is planned to be out before the end of this year. That's all we know.

Any news on the end of the year being brought forward to facilitate a faster deployment of the app?

Good to know. I'll start buying expansions and what not to make sure I'm ready when the app releases.

We don't actually know when the app has been planned to come out.

We have been told a) to expect more information in 2017, b) that the app has not been scrapped altogether, it is still in development. Which is a lot when you consider FFG's policy about unreleased products.

It will come out when it comes out.

Ugh. My friends didn't like the one vs. many mechanic of IA or Core Descent. They LOVE the co-op mechanic of Descent w/App. Imperial Assault without app is a pass. Imperial Assault with an app is a BUY EVERYTHING situation.

My friends are meh on Skirmish. There is a small local community who plays, but most of us would rather play X-Wing or Armada to scratch the Star Wars itch.

The one guy who works on app development at FFG tweeted something along the lines of "2017 isn't over yet" or something in response to a comment about it coming out this year. That was the latest mention I think we've had on it.

Gloomhaven's second printing is looking like it will drop before the app. Looks like it gets my money instead of Heart of the Empire.

Ya Gloomhaven is great definitely try it out, I would realistically expect the app sometime in late 2018, maybe 2019 so don't hold your breath.

Isn't the app delayed cause EA bull?

There is no indication of "being delayed", because there has been no product announcement (so that we would know an expected release quarter and year), and in general FFG does not give release dates. Only FFG knows what has and hasn't affected development plans or the development itself.

What's EA bull?

EA has the license for Star Wars electronic games (or whatever their license covers - the public does not know the exact scope), so the app might potentially needed to be cleared as not falling under the EA license in addition to the regular LFL approval. You may say it's ridiculous. It's just a potential issue, but FFG has fallen prey to gray areas before with Imperial Assault.

I'm still confident that the app will come out sooner or later.

Yeah, as a companion app for a tabletop game I don't see it competing much with EA... but EA doesn't really have a reputation as a company for which that would make them any easier to work with, anyway.
