X-Wing core set discontinued?

By gsroach101, in X-Wing

I run a FLGS and we've just heard that the original core set is unlikely to come back into stock. Are there any plans to place the cards that are only available in that set into any other packs? If not, then this will mean that any new players will be unable to get these cards unless they can pick them up second hand.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Unless something official is published by FFG, this might just be your FLGS. THere's been a change of supplier recently, so maybe they find it difficult to acquire stock from the new supplier?

There's been no official announcement of any set going out of print for good.

If we'd heard it from anywhere else we probably would have taken it with a pinch of salt, but we've had that in an email from esdevium, FF's main supplier in the UK, so we're taking it pretty seriously.

There is also the fact that currently FFG is out of the original core set and has it listed as awaiting reprint. So I would think that unless they remove it from that list and make a public anouncement that they are not going to ever make more, there is nothing to worry about.

That's oneway to nerf Rebels...

That kinda sucks, the fabled X wing fix is discontinuing half of the ships. Out-Effing-Standing.

Lol

Are you sure they're not just saying they don't currently have any stock and won't until it's reprinted?

The response we recieved from them when we tried to order them was

Sadly the first set isn’t likely to be back and the force awakens is out of stock at the mo

so we're a bit concerned that they may be discontinuing it and the cards won't be available to new players. Having Luke and R2 is still a hook for many new players so it would be a bad idea to not have them available

Maybe this means they:

1. Don't want 3 (!) core sets on sale at the same time

AND

2. Will follow TFA exactly by releasing another core set (branded The Last Jedi), which will arrive in stores unannounced in early September. While they're at it, they will also add two film tie-in ships to Wave 11 (also announced in September, but released on film day, Dec. 15th).

Seems strange to me, but they might do such a thing.

This is the Biggs nerf! Just make him unavailable and stupidly expensive on the second hand market!

It's been working with Triple K-Wings so far.

Yeah, I've seen some of the prices people are asking/paying. Silly...

Or for more tinfoil hat speculation; X-Wing 2.0! Inbound!

Hmm... well I will be at GenCon this year so I guess I will find out in a couple months.

Frankly, that was the first thought that came to me by reflex. IMO there's no way they'd take "New Hope" Luke out of the game entirely, so they will make him available again, just in a new format/packaging. As gsroach101 stated, that's a big draw for the game for all the old nostalgia nuts, and there's no way it wouldn't adversely impact sales for new entries.

In all honesty; I think producing a 2.0 core set whilst still having the TFA core on sale is not going to happen. But then I have been very wrong about FFG in the past. I honestly don't know what Esdev mean in their email but it just seems a fully janky way to implement it...

I definitely think it would be very interesting to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" at some of their production/planning meetings. I'm betting they could make some decent coin on tickets to those!

Could also be part of a distributor shake-up?

They could be diabolical and basically put everything in the old core but errata'd and fixed on the cards. Not X-wing 2.0 but basically revamping the OG X-wings and ties. It would also force vet players to buy it if the pilots are any good or they are OCD and want the current better worded cards. Genius!

That's certainly what I'd do if I were in charge...

I would email back for clarification. This all seems like a knee jerk reaction to a poorly worded statement to me.

Hell they could even give them the Poe treatment and make second versions of all of them. Could still get R2 and the same models but all the pilots are mkII

Given that there's a massive distribution change coming up over the next few weeks with Alliance/Diamond in both the US and Canada, I'm sure product is "Unavailable" as the change comes in.

New players will just have to win tournaments to get maneuvering templates and dice now lol

While flying nothing but ships with [stop] maneuvers.
