The Rebel Workhorse

By Drakeheart, in X-Wing Squad Lists

The BTL-A4 Y-Wing. The work horse of the Rebels before the X-Wing. And yet, rarely seen on the table; only in specific circumstances, like the Stresshog.

As someone who loves flying the Y-Wing, I was wondering why that is. Is it the limited dial/lack of repositions? The idea of limiting a turret to only the ship's firing arc?

What is it about the Y-Wing that people shy away from the title?

I personally think that the turret is the great advandate of the Y-Wing. Apart from that it has got a horrible dial and no (native) repositioning.

So it is really difficult to get things in ARC. And even if you do.... an additional 2 dice attack doesn't seem to be such a huge threat (unless you're playing against other rebels, which I hardly do in my local meta)

It's definitely the dial. That's why thug life was big for a while thou. The unhinged astromech w/ TLT's made for a tough list to face. There is still no re-positioning, but making a 3 hard turn green instead of red was a big difference.

As for the title, it's because of the no turret thing. A ship with a bad dial is not as bad if staying in arc is not important, but limited options and no re-positioning is huge when your trying to get shots off with the Y. And most of us can't fly it like Heaver.

Horton Salm (25)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R2-D6 (1)
Expertise (4)
Vectored Thrusters (2)

Total: 38

my favorite.

I just can't stand the title. With such a poor dial you'll rarely get a shot off. But if you fly them with TLT and no title, I can begin to like them.

The above Horton build is offensively glorious, but my fear is always how quickly he will die with no regen. You need Biggs along with him.

I like this Horton a lot, too. His TLT shots seem to hit about 80 - 90 % of the time. But that's still just 2 damage per round and unfortunately he will go down rather quickly. He's really easy to focus down. Then 38 points go with him, which most probably mean a loss.

What exactly is bad about the dial? a red three turn? It has plenty of whites and greens and it can turn around. I ran 4 Y wings 3 of which had the title.

2 Gold squadron with Ion turret, title, and R2 Astromech

Gold squadron with TLT, Title and R3-A2

Gold Squadron with TLT and Seismic charge

Went 6-2 at worlds 2015. Missed the cut by 22 points.

It is not that hard to point a Y at a ship and shoot it. There are plenty of ships in any faction that are being used that 2 dice can hit. Especially when they can't spend the focus on your two die attack because they know an ion shot is about to follow. Ion hogs are scary as hell because they are so good at walking ships off the board. Vectored thrusters giving them a reposition option also helps them drastically. People have this mentality that the lack of greens is a detriment. With an actual turret, yes, unhinged is great because it gives them faster options to circle. But R2 astro is great on Golds with the title. Just point and shoot. It's classic X-wing and works just fine.

I wish rebel Y-wings had an innate EPT like scum Ys....We gotta waste our droid to give us that elite talent so we don't have the nice droid combos

Maybe it's time for a rogue one aces pack that contains blue Squadron Y-wing generic pilot's with EPT along with some new pilots. (Would be keen for more X-wing pilots and a T-65 title to help the X-wing)

New droids too

I'd like to see that with a new Dutch pilot card, PS 7 W/EPT.

Yea that Horton Build is great...you just need to present other targets that are a bigger threat and let Horton do his token stripping goodness and the 2 hits every time
