In the Rebel Recon after the Skystrike academy episode, Pablo Hidalgo said they floated the idea that Sabine painted Biggs helmet, since the same checkerboard pattern appears on her armor. Storywise they went with having Wedge and Hobbie extracted instead (I think because it didn't make sense for the established Biggs timeline). But who knows, maybe they all fly together later on?

Not a bad idea, I also have my X-Wing for Wedge painted like his Bacta Wars X-Wing so the checkerboard makes sense.
