Best sealant for paintwork

By taulover55, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

after being a massive fan of Games Workshop stuff when i played 40K (back when 5th edition was released, its been a while) I've fallen out of touch with the best items on the market.

I've just finished a K wing that i am quite proud of but have noticed some rubbing off of the paint already on the ball turret (i hold the model there whilst painting) and want to seal the ship to preserve the paintjob.

Previously i used the Purity Seal spray from GW but was wondering if there was anything else on the market that would give a matt effect finish for it.

Edit: Also is there any difference to using a Rattle Can compared to Brush On Varnishes??

I'm in the UK just for reference

Winsor and Newton or Testor's Dullcote is the gold standard, but I've personally found that pretty much any rattle-can varnish with do. Typically I use Plasti-kote brand, which comes in gloss and matte. I gloss coat first, then matte coat, then come back in with a brush-on gloss (mine's Revell brand) to re-coat windows, lasers, lights, guns etc.

I wouldn't advise GW, especially not for varnish. It's a lot more expensive for basically no extra benefit.

Testor's Dullcote is the best I know.

Montana matte varnish is my choice - mostly because it's what the art shop had in that was cheap. It's good, but can frost easily if you're heavy-handed with it.
