Snipe, counter and Valen Rudor.

By Liquid XI, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Hey guys. Last night I was playing with some friends and we came upon a situation involving the infamous Valen Rudor. We know he cannot be attacked while you are engaged with another enemy squadron. My question is: Does his wording applies to other attack effects (Who the rules say function like regular attacks and are affected by keywords and abilities) like Snipe, Counter, etc?

Example: If he attacks me, and I have counter, does my counter activation needs to be directed at the other enemy squadron whom I'm engaged with?

I'm sorry if its a bit confusing. We have searched the forums and have found people saying you can , since counter functions like a standard attack, only it cannot be directed at Rudor, so I need to declare another target (Being the other engaged enemy) . And others that you can't, because you can only use counter against the squadron that attacked you.

Thanks in advance.

No Worries, I got you here :D

A regular Attack is an Attack

Snipe Attack is an Attack

Counter Attack is an Attack

None of those can target Rudor if you are engaged with someone else.

And you can only counter the person who attacked you - so if Rudor attacks you, and you have counter, and you're Engaged by someone else (even if they're heavy!) - You cannot counter attack Valen Rudor. The counter-attack just fails. Doesn't happen.

If the other person attacks you, you can totally counter them. But only them. You do not get to choose an alternate target - Counter can only target the person who attacked you.

There's a reason why Valen has that ****-eating Grin :D

To completemnt Dras explanation, here's the wording for Counter from the RRG:

"Counter X: After a squadron performs a non-counter attack against you, you may attack that squadron with an anti-squadron armament of blue dice equal to X, even if you are destroyed."

And just to finish it off, check the FAQ on page 9.

Valen Rudor
An enemy squadron engaged with another squadron cannot perform a counter attack against Valen Rudor.

Thank you very much everyone!

Just as an addendum, if you're a squadron and have an ability that lets you do damage that is not an attack (Mauler Mithel, Boba Fett, Ten Numb's splash damage are all examples of damage that isn't actually an attack) that damage totally effects Valen without issue (and can't be defended against/scattered). Your best best for fighting Valen is either high-power anti-squadron dice from a ship or damage that comes from non-attack sources from squadrons. In the case of guys like Mithel, you don't even need to roll dice against Valen or anybody else and can attack other squadrons freely.
