I've played around a bit with the Springfield M1903 and I think it's much better than you give it credit for =D. Obviously it is not a card for solo, but even with 2 investigators it can be quite powerful. While a Guardian wants to be the one engaged with enemies (typically) that doesn't always pan out, and often enough you have a Seeker forced to engage a difficult monster, and then it's the Guardian's job to go get them out of trouble. The Springfield m1903 can help a lot. It's massive +3 to combat checks means that Zoey or Roland is packing at least a 7, and can further boost that if they need to. Your chances of hitting your ally are relatively small in most scenarios.
my main complaint is -as you pointed out- that it is useless against Massive enemies. They are relatively infrequent thankfully, but it's quite a letdown that these monsters which you really want a big powerful weapon against can't be attacked by the m1903. And especially that it would show up in this particular mythos pack seems like rubbing salt in the wound.
Especially when, thematically, that's exactly when you'd want to use it! I was thinking when I saw it that we might see a sniper or hunting rifle that could allow you to shoot enemies in an adjacent location, which would certainly help with Massive enemies. Not sure if attacking from adjacent locations is too powerful or not, though.

Depends on the difficulty level, as higher difficulties flatten the bell curve with a wider spread of values. And if you take a stray shot on that -6 or -8 in expert, it hurts.

Don't forget you (or your partner) can evade a massive enemy. Exhausted massive enemies are no longer considered engaged.
Edited by BD FloryYa, that is how I would use the Springfield. Evade the enemy, then shoot it. Lining up the shot. Seems like it would be a good combo with an investigator who can evade effectively. Then there is no risk of killing your buddy with your gun.
